SVC picks up pair of conference wins

BOX SCORE - GAME ONE

BOX SCORE - GAME TWO

The Saint Vincent softball team won a pair of road games at Grove City College, by scores of 6-5 and 9-1, to even its conference record on the season.

With the wins, the Bearcats are 18-8 overall, 4-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

In game one, the hosts scored in the bottom of the second off SVC starter Laken Lyon, taking a 1-0 lead.  In the top of the third, the Bearcats came right back, as Samantha Emert singled with one out then moved to third when Sarah Swettlen reached on an error.  Emert later scored when Breanne Wallace reached on an error, and Swettlen was brought home by a Becky Deane sacrifice fly, giving SVC a 2-1 edge.

The lead increased to 4-1 an inning later, when Ally Panzella doubled home Lyon, who had reached on an error.  Emert singled home Panzella to make it a three-run game, but the hosts returned the favor with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Up 4-3, SVC added insurance runs in the top of the 7th.   Deane singled with two outs, and pinch-runner Alie Reid moved to third on a Shannon Baczek double.  Lyon reached on an error, scoring Reid to make the score 5-3.  Baczek later scored on a passed ball to give SVC its sixth run -- all of which were unearned.

The extra runs were needed, as the Wolverines added a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the 7th, but Lyon (4-2) got a strikeout to end the game and secure the win for the Bearcats.

Game two started on a strong note for SVC, playing as the home team.  The Bearcats scored a pair of runs in the first, with Lindsey Daniels and Emert singling to lead off.  Three walks later allowed both to score.

In the second, Saint Vincent added four runs on four hits to take a 6-1 lead.  In the bottom of the fifth, the team took advantage of two more errors and added three hits.  When Wallace crossed the plate with SVC's 9th run, the eight-run advantage resulted in the game being stopped.

Emert (7-3) went the distance for the win, giving up just two hits and striking out one.

SVC hosts Geneva College on Saturday at 1PM.
