BOX SCORE - GAME ONEBOX SCORE - GAME TWOPHOTO GALLERYThe Saint Vincent Bearcats dropped the opening game of a conference doubleheader to Washington & Jefferson by a score of 12-2, then rebounded for a 3-1 come-from-behind win in game two.
SVC took the early lead in game one when
Sarah Swettlen led off the home half of the third inning with her third home run of the season, this one to left center field. However, things unraveled for the Bearcats in the top of the 5th, when the Presidents send 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs on four hits, taking advantage of three SVC errors. After adding three more runs in the fifth, the Presidents tallied five more in the 7th, cruising to the win.
Game two was a pitchers' battle between SVC's
Ally Vrcek and W&J's Krista McCartney. W&J, playing as the home team, got an infield single to start the bottom of the first inning, and an Abby Cunningham single scored Kelsey Cunningham to give the Presidents' a 1-0 lead. The score remained that way until the top of the 6th.
Pinch-hitter
Marisa McAndrews drew a walk to lead off, and was replaced by pinch-runner
Suzie Cool. With one out,
Samantha Emert singled, putting runners at first and second.
Breanne Wallace drew a walk, moving Cool to third and pinch-runner
Alie Reid to second.
Becky Deane then singled to right field, scoring Cool and Reid with would prove to be the game-winning runs.
Saint Vincent added an insurance run in the top of the 7th, as
Laken Lyon started the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Jenna LoVasco.
Lindsey Daniels reached on an infield single, and Lyon made a heads-up play by never slowing down as she rounded third, beating a throw home to make the score 3-1.
Vrcek (5-2) took care of the rest, as she sat down the final 15 batters she faced, giving up just four hits on the afternoon while striking out seven.
With the split, SVC is now 2-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while W&J moves to 4-2. The Bearcats are back in action Monday at Grove City College.
