Saint Vincent thwarts Bethany, 15-6

BETHANY, W. Va. (April 9) - The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals in the second quarter en route to a 15-6 win at Bethany in the lacrosse edition of the #GreenGame.

The Bearcats improve ot 3-8 on the season with the win, while the Bison drop to 3-11. The two teams may possibly meet later in the season during the second-annual Presidents' Athletic Conference men's lacrosse championship.

Bethany struck first just 3:31 into the game to open up with a 1-0 lead. Bryce Pasquariello scored at 9:54 on a pass from Matt Mackey to tie the game, but the Bison answered the goal 35 seconds to re-take the lead, 2-1. After 1:04 had elapsed and SVC was put in a man-up situation, Sean Kretovics capitalized with a goal off of a Tim Oxenreiter pass. Bethany once again re-took the lead at 3:02, but a Mackey goal (assisted by Nick Pensyl) closed the first quarter with 18 seconds remaining to tie the game, 3-3.

The second quarter was all Bearcats as Saint Vincent found the back of the net seven times, including four goals in the first four minutes of the period. Oxenreiter scored eight seconds into the quarter off the opening face-off win by Charlie Russo and Kretovics found Pasquariello 1:06 later for the second score. Brendon Masten tallied a goal at the 13:10-mark, 48 seconds after Pasquariello. Pensyl notched a man-down goal at 11:03 to conclude SVC's four goals in four minutes. After a Mackey goal at 9:09 made it 8-3, the Bearcats didn't score until late in the first half. Pensyl registered his second goal with 1:56 to play in the half on an assist by Mackey and Kyle Arthur capped the half with a goal 26 later, 10-3.

Bethany tallied a man-up goal early in the second half, but three-straight goals in a 2:23 span iced the game. Russo recorded the first goal and then Oxenreiter scored twice in 59 seconds to complete his first career hat trick, 13-4.

Arthur (from Mackey) and Kretovics each scored in the fourth quarter as SVC won by the eventual final of 15-6.

SVC held a dominating 49-16 advantage on shots, including 35-10 on goal. SVC won 19 of 23 face-offs, with Russo going 16-19 on draws.

Mackey finished with a game-high five points (two goals, three assists) while Oxenreiter contributed four points (three goals) and Kretovics had three points (two goals). Pasquariello, Pensyl and Arthur each recorded a pair of goals in the win.

Greg Gonzalez earned the win in goal, making two saves in playing all 30 minutes of the first half. Logan Hoffmann played the third quarter and Tim McCall made a pair of saves in the fourth quarter.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Thursday, April 17 with a 7 p.m. game at Washington & Jefferson, another PAC foe and SVC's opponent in last year's inaugural PAC men's lacrosse championship.
