LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 7) -
Scott Luthy scored two goals and assisted another as the Saint Vincent men's soccer team earned a 5-1 victory over Franciscan University in Latrobe, Pa. The victory was the second straight for the team and they have now totaled a combined eight goals in those two matches.
Luthy gave the Bearcats an early lead after scoring on a header off a pass from freshman
Zachary Lakenan just under a little less than two minutes into the contest. The score remained that way until Luthy scored his second goal of the match in the 23nd minute. This time the assist came off a cross from sophomore
Eduardo Wills. The visiting Barons answered with a goal in the 33nd minute to cut the SVC lead in half. However, Saint Vincent quickly responded with a goal of its one just a little over a minute later, pushing the lead to 3-1.
Saint Vincent continued to set the pace offensively in the second half, scoring two more goals to finish off the victory. Senior
Brody Ruffner tallied his first score of the season off a pass from Luthy to make it 4-1 in favor of the Bearcats in the 53nd minute. Saint Vincent would add a fifth and final goal when sophomore
Kevin Proctor scored on a free kick. the goal was Proctor's first of the 2014 season.
Luthy finished his day with two goals and an assist to lead the Bearcats offensive attack, which tallied a season high 27 shots and had six players attempt multiple shots in the match. Both Lakenan and Proctor chipped in a goal and an assist to back Luthy's strong play. Senior goalkeeper
Eric Houghton played all 90 minutes and earned his second victory of the season in net.
The Bearcats will look for their third straight win when they host the University of Mount Union on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Match time is slated for 4 p.m.
