BOX SCOREThe Saint Vincent Bearcat men's lacrosse team opened the 2015 season with a 10-1 victory on a cold afternoon in Latrobe.
Senior
Tim Oxenreiter scored the season's first goal, when he found the back of the net on an unassisted goal with 11:26 to play in the opening quarter of play.
From that point, SVC struggled offensively until finally breaking through with three more goals over the final 3:37 of the second quarter.
Brendon Masten scored off a pass from
Jon Souders with 3:37 to play in the second to make it 2-0 Bearcats. Oxenreiter added his second goal of the day, scoring off a pass from
Nick Pensyl with 24 seconds left in the second quarter. However, the Bearcats were not done, as Pensyl added a goal of his own off a pass from Oxenreiter with just 10 seconds to play in the quarter, giving SVC a 4-0 advantage after the first 30 minutes.
The visiting Barons got on the board in the third quarter, before seeing Oxenreiter tally his third goal of the afternoon, making the score 5-1 Bearcats after three quarters. Oxenreiter's third goal was assisted by
Kyle Arthur.
SVC poured in on in the fourth quarter, scoring five more goals to seal up the season-opening victory. Pensyl scored two more, while Oxenreiter added his fourth on the day. Meanwhile, Arthur and
Corbin Linville each recorded goals in the final quarter of action as well.
Oxenreiter led the offense with four goals and an assist, while Pensyl had a solid day as well, totaling three goals and two assists.
SVC outshot Franciscan 38-19 for the match.
Greg Gonzalez got the win in net for SVC, making four saves.
The Bearcats return to action when they travel to Mount Union for a match on Saturday, Feb. 28. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
