BOX SCORELATROBE, Pa. (March 7) - Despite a furious comeback attempt, the Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team dropped an 11-10 decision to rival W&J on the SVC Turf.
The Bearcats (1-2) trailed 8-3 at halftime but worked themselves back into the game in the second half before coming up just short. The Presidents improved to 4-0 for the first time in school history.
After the visiting Presidents opened with the first two scores of the contest, SVC responded with goals from
Nick Pensyl and
Anthony Hogeback, tying the score early in the second quarter. However, W&J would score six of the next seven goals to build an 8-3 halftime advantage. The lone SVC goal during that span was by
Kyle Arthur off an assist from
Jon Souders.
Pensyl,
Bryce Pasquariello and
Patrick Kenna each scored in the third quarter as SVC worked its deficit to 10-6. In the fourth quarter, senior
Tim Oxenreiter scored off a pass from Pensyl while playing a man up and then Hogeback added another goal to bring the score to 10-8 W&J.
After a Presidents goal strengthened their lead, Hogeback and Oxenreiter tallied goals to bring the deficit to a single goal for the first time since the second quarter. SVC couldn't tally the equalizer though and dropped their second consecutive match by one goal.
Hogeback put together a productive day, scoring three times on a total of five shots. Oxenreiter added two scores, while Pensyl scored twice and dished out to assists to help lead the Bearcats' offense.
Greg Gonzalez got the start in net and took the loss, making five saves.
SVC returns to action at home when they host Hood College (Md.) on Saturday, March 14. Start time is slated for 1 p.m.
