WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 2) - The Saint Vincent softball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader split against W&J at Brooks Park. SVC fell 3-1 on a walkoff home run in game one, before bouncing back for a 6-0 shutout in game two against the defending PAC champions.
The split puts SVC at 1-1 in the PAC and 13-3 overall, while W&J sits at 3-3 in the league and 10-8 overall.
In game one the Presidents opened the scoring with an RBI double by Jen Bahm in the bottom of the second. After two separate delays, a rain delay of nearly an hour and then a 30-minute lightning delay, the Bearcats needed to rally in the seventh inning.
Down to their final three outs in game one and trailing 1-0, sophomore third baseman
Kelsey Lineberger launched her fifth home run of the season to tie the score at 1-1. After one out, sophomore catcher
Breanne Wallace reached base on a double to chase W&J starter Krista McCartney. Pitcher
Samantha Emert then singled to center to put runners on the corners with one out.
W&J managed to work their way out of the jam, getting the second out on a fielders choice out at home before getting the third out on a called third strike. The host Presidents then got a two-run walkoff home from Rachel Marx to earn the game one win.
Freshman designated player
Emily Duerr had the only multi-hit performance for the Bearcats in the opener. Emert took the tough luck loss, allowing three runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. Emert struck out five and walked three as her record dropped to 5-1 on the season.
Duerr was the key component to the Bearcats win in game two. The freshman left hander pitched a complete game shutout to improve her record to 5-0 this season. Duerr allowed five hits and walked just one over seven innings of work. Duerr also helped herself at the plate, going 3 for 4 with an RBI, a run scored and a double.
Wallace and
Shelby Noel each slugged home runs in the second game to help lift SVC, who now have hit 12 home runs already this season. Duerr, Noel and Wallace all recorded multi-hit games in the win.
SVC returns to action when they host Westminster on Wednesday, April 8 for a PAC doubleheader. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
