GREENVILLE, Pa. (May 2) –
Dylan Pietrantoni pitched a complete game to lead Saint Vincent to a 4-2 victory over Thiel College at Tomcat Park in game one to help the Bearcats earn a split of the conference doubleheader. SVC dropped game two by a 4-2 margin to the Tomcats.
The Bearcats got on the board first in the opening game of the day. Junior outfielder
Aaron Burger led off with a single then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Brennan Hoffer.
Later in the inning, junior second baseman
Ben Webb produced a RBI single with two outs to score Burger and give SVC a 1-0 advantage.
The lead was short-lived as Thiel answered back with a two unearned runs in the bottom half of the frame.
The score remained that way until SVC broke through with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore shortstop
TJ Kuny led off with a single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by senior
John Malone.
A dropped third strike play allowed Hoffer to come around and give SVC its first lead of the contest, at 3-2.
SVC tacked on another run in the sixth inning. Center fielder
Braden Hoffer slapped a one-out triple and scored on an RBI single by third baseman
Chris Winkler, pushing the SVC edge to 4-2.
Thiel put two runners on in the sixth inning but Pietrantoni worked out of the jam, getting an inning ending double play.
Pietrantoni pitched a complete game, allowing only two unearned runs as he picked up his third win of the season. Pietrantoni allowed six hits while striking out one Tomcat batter.
After three scoreless innings in game two, Thiel tallied three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. The Tomcats held that lead until the Bearcats final at bat.
Braden Hoffer used a ground out to score Webb, making it 4-1. Senior shortstop
Matt Loftis then added an RBI single in what would be his final plate appearance as a Bearcat. SVC would bring the tying run to the plate but couldn't complete the comeback and fell by a 4-2 score.
Freshman catcher
Dylan Kugler tallied the Bearcats lone multi-hit effort in game two, going 2 for 3 at the plate.
Michael Patsch took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over six innings of work. Patsch struck out four and walked two.
Malone finished the regular season as the PAC's top hitter, compiling a .464 average which was four points higher than Thomas More's Donovan Pogue.
SVC wraps up the 2015 season with an 18-20 record overall and a 10-14 mark in league play.
