PHOTO GALLERYCLERMONT, Fla. (Feb. 28) - The Saint Vincent Softball team opened the season by splitting a pair of games on the first day of their annual Spring Break trip.
Junior pitcher
Samantha Emert used a strong pitching performance to help SVC best Elizabethtown 2-1 in the opener. The Bearcats dropped a 12-0 decision to Mount Union in the second game of the day.
Emert, who led the Presidents' Athletic Conference in Earned Run Average in 2015, got off to a solid start in her 2016 debut. Emert pitched seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out nine Blue Jay batters.
Sarah Swettlen and
Shelby Noel accounted for the only two SVC hits. Noel slashed a triple and came around to score the eventual winning run of the game.
Mount Union pounced on the Bearcats in game two, scoring a single run in the top of the first before adding seven more in the second and three more in the third. The Purple Raiders finished the scoring with another run in the fifth. SVC committed three errors in the loss.
Offensively,
Kristin Segiel,
Morgan Murphy,
Adrianna Workman and Emert each recorded singles for the Bearcats.
Saint Vincent (1-1) will return to action tomorrow with two more games. Action gets underway at 9 a.m. when the Bearcats face Immaculata University before taking on York College at 11 a.m.
