Samantha Emert pitched a shutout as the Saint Vincent softball team defeated Immaculata University 3-0 in game one. The Bearcats then dropped a hard-fought game, 5-4 to York.
Emert pitched seven innings in game one, allowing no runs on five hits, while striking out eight and walking just two Lady Mac hitters.
SVC scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning. After Emert reached base on an error,
Breanne Wallace tripled to deep left center. Freshman
Nicole Adisey used an RBI single to score Wallace and give Saint Vincent a 2-0 edge.
Sophomore shortstop
Courtney Patterson smashed a home run to lead off the third inning and push the advantage to 3-0 for SVC.
That was all Emert would need, as she cruised through the next three innings, at one point retiring seven batters in a row. Immaculata put two runners on in the seventh but Emert struck out the potential tying run to end the game.
Sarah Swettlen and Adisey recorded two-hit games for SVC in the win over Immaculata.
Saint Vincent scored first against York, taking a 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Patterson that scored freshman
Kelly Flaherty. York took the lead with a two-run homer in the fourth. SVC loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning before first baseman
Shelby Noel laced a two-run single down the first base line, helping SVC retake the lead at 3-2.
Emily Duerr added an RBI on a sac fly to push the lead to 4-2 for SVC.
However, York countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame and kept SVC off the board the final two innings to pull out the win.
Morgan Murphy paced the SVC offense with a 3-for-3 effort out of the nine spot in the order. Noel and Patterson had two hits each.
Cassidy Uscilowski took the loss in the circle, pitching six innings while allowing five runs (four earned) and striking out six.
Saint Vincent moved its record to 2-2 overall so far this season.
The Bearcats continue Spring Break play Tuesday, Feb. 29 with two more games. SVC faces Wartburg (IA) at 11 a.m. before taking on Capital (OH) at 3 p.m.
