Shelby Noel hit a grand slam and
Emily Duerr pitched a one-hit shutout as the SVC softball team blanked Wartburg 8-0 in game one this afternoon. The Bearcats then fell 3-0 to Capital in game two.
SVC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Noel,
Samantha Emert and
Nicole Adisey each had RBI singles for the Bearcats.
In the third inning, Adisey drove home Duerr to make it 4-0. Then in the fourth inning, Noel smashed a grand slam for her first home run of the season, making it 8-0 SVC.
Alexus Fearer,
Morgan Murphy and
Sarah Swettlen scored on the Noel home run.
Noel reached base all three times, going 2-for-2 with the grand slam and added an RBI single to total five RBI on the afternoon. Adisey, just a freshman, went 3 for 3 in the opening game of the day.
Duerr was excellent in the circle, pitching five scoreless innings and surrendering just one hit by the Knights.
In game two, SVC gave up solo runs in the second, third and sixth innings. Freshman catcher
Kelsey Hunter paced the SVC offense with two hits, including a double. Freshman
Mackenzie Gostomski also added a double. Junior pitcher
Cassidy Uscilowski took the loss in the circle.
This marked the third straight day that SVC split its doubleheader. Saint Vincent sits at 3-3 overall. The Bearcats face Rose Hulman and Finlandia tomorrow (Wednesday) to wrap up the Spring Break trip.
