The SVC women's basketball team posted a 68-49 victory on the road in New Wilmington against Westminster College, leading from start to finish.
Babette Sanmartin started the scoring 45 seconds into play with a layup, then
Hannah Carroll hit back-to-back threes to make it an 8-0 Saint Vincent lead less than two minutes into the game.
Â
A steal and fast break layup by Carroll then made it 10-1 before the Titans got on track. Down 13-3, the hosts hit a pair of shots from outside the arc to make the score 13-9 at the 1:40 mark of the first, but
Lauren Donley hit a three in the final minute of the quarter to give the Bearcats a 16-9 lead at the end of the quarter.
Â
The second quarter also started with a Sanmartin layup, and SVC quickly got another pair of three pointers, this time from
Mara Benvenuti and
Susie Ellis, running the lead to 24-10. Westminster responded with four points of their own to cut the margin back to ten, and it remained near that level the rest of the half. A layup by
Lucy Bujdos with 28 seconds left ended the scoring, as the Bearcats took a 31-20 lead into the locker room.
Â
The Titans opened the second half with a 6-0 run to cut the margin to just five points, but SVC responded with a 9-3 run, started by a
Maria Morgan long two-point shot and capped by a Morgan reverse layup off a pass from Ellis that made the score 40-29 at the 4:29 mark of the third.
Â
The lead increased to 44-30 after a Benvenuti trey with 1:30 on the clock, but Westminster's Danielle Dindak added five quick points to bring the margin back to single digits. Benvenuti then ended the quarter with a free throw to make it 45-38 in favor of Saint Vincent.
Â
Early in the fourth, Westminster made it a 6-point game (47-41) but the Bearcats then went on a tear, scoring 13 straight points to put the game out of reach, going on to win by a score of 68-49.Â
Benvenuti led the offense with 16 points, while Ellis added 14 and Sanmartin and Carroll each scored 11.Â
Katie Ryan had a game-high 10 rebounds, while Sanmartin grabbed 9 boards.
Â
With the win, Saint Vincent is now 6-8 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference and moves into a three-way tie for 5th place.  Westminster falls to 2-12.Â
The Bearcats return to action at home on Wednesday (February 10) with a matchup against 13-1 Washington & Jefferson College at 5:30 in the Carey Center.Â
