LATROBE, Pa. (March 20) -
Maggie Nelson and
Hannah Carroll scored four goals each as the Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team powered past Mount St. Joseph 12-4 in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference action.
Just like yesterday, the Bearcats came out strong, taking a 5-0 lead over the first seven-plus minutes of game action. Five different Bearcats scored during the early game run, as SVC got scores from Carroll, Nelson,
Sarah Wallerstedt,
Naomi Schwaiger and
Jess Heuler.
Later in the half, Nelson would add two more goals to give Saint Vincent a 7-0 lead with 12:24 left in the opening half. MSJ closed out the first half scoring with an unassisted goal at the 5:32 mark, making it 7-1 SVC at the break.
Senior
Helena Shoplik started the scoring in the second half, giving SVC an 8-1 advantage off a pass from sophomore
Katie Stallings. The visiting Lions would respond with two goals to cut the deficit to 8-3 with 25:51 to play. The Bearcats would squash any hopes of a comeback by scoring the next four goals, three by Carroll and the final one by Nelson. MSJ would close the scoring with a goal with 33 seconds left.
Carroll led the way offensively with six points (four goals, two assists) while Nelson had five points (four goals, one assist). Shoplik chipped in four points (one goal, three assists) and Wallerstedt had three points.
Katie Uhring and
Kelsey McMillen helped lead a solid defensive effort. The duo combined for nine ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Freshman
Maria Franey got the win in goal, making six saves.
With the win the Bearcats move to 2-0 in ORLC play, while Mount St. Joseph drops to 1-1 in league action.
The Bearcats return ORLC action with a home contest against Waynesburg University on Tuesday, March 29. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
