PITTSBURGH, Pa. (March 22) - The Saint Vincent softball team earned a decisive 9-0 game one victory over La Roche in five innings, before dropping game two by a 7-2 score.
After two scoreless innings, SVC put up three runs in the top of the third inning. Sophomore
Shelby Noel started the frame with a double and came around to score when classmate
Emily Duerr traded places with a double of her own, making it 1-0 Bearcats. After back-to-back outs,
Breanne Wallace walked to keep the inning going.
Kelly Flaherty and
Morgan Murphy then each added RBI singles to make it 3-0.
In the fourth inning the Bearcats added three more runs. Sophomore shortstop
Courtney Patterson singled to center to lead off the inning before Noel tripled her home, making it 4-0. Duerr then produced her second double of the game, scoring Noel to make it 5-0. After singles from
Nicole Adisey and Wallace, Flaherty used a RBI groundout to push the lead to 6-0 after four innings.
SVC then added three more runs in the fifth. Patterson and Noel started the frame with back-to-back singles before pinch hitter
Kelsey Lineberger lined a two-run triple to right, making it 8-0. The Bearcats got the final run of the game when senior
Christina Folino brought home Lineberger with an RBI groundout.
The Bearcats collected 9 runs on a season-high 18 hits in the game one win. Individually, Noel went 4-for-4 with a double and triple to pace the offense. Murphy also went 3-for-3 while Patterson, Duerr, Wallace and Flaherty each recorded two hits. Junior pitcher
Samantha Emert got the win in the circle, allowing just two hits in seven innings of work to improve her record to 5-1 on the season. Emert also struck out nine while not issuing a walk in the game.
La Roche jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game two before Lineberger used a two-run triple to score
Mackenzie Gostomski and Folino in the top of the 5th. Both offenses were held in check for the remainder of the game as the Redhawks won 7-2. Duerr took the loss in the circle in game two.
With the split, SVC moves to 8-6 overall on the season. La Roche now sits at 5-4 overall in 2016.
The Bearcats return to action tomorrow at Penn State Fayette with another non-conference doubleheader. Start time is slated for 3 p.m.
