LATROBE, Pa. (April 16) - Collin Laguzza earned his first win of the season and Greg Martin picked up his 7th save as the Saint Vincent baseball team defeated Geneva by a score of 8-5 in game one of a doubleheader at Bearcat Ballfield. The Bearcats fell behind and eventually dropped game two by a 6-3 margin.

The split gave Saint Vincent the series win over Geneva, taking two out of the three games.

SVC got on the board in the bottom of the first in game one as Luke Fox and Dylan Kugler walked to start the inning.  Ben Webb then singled to left to load the bases, and Greg Martin reached on an error that scored Fox.  Jason Vater then followed with an RBI single.  Chris Winker reached on a fielder's choice that scored a run, and Matthew Morrone made it a 4-0 game with a run-scoring single.

Up 4-1 in the bottom of the third, SVC added to its lead.  Aaron Burger and Vater singled, then Burger scored on a groundout by Winkler.   Morrone then had another RBI single that ran the lead to 6-1.

The Golden Tornadoes cut the margin to just one in the fifth inning, 6-5, but the Bearcats responded in the bottom of the 6th.  Brennan Hoffer singled to lead off, moved to second on a sacrifice by Fox, then scored on a single by Kugler.  An error led to another Bearcat run, ending the scoring at 8-5.

Martin worked the final two innings to preserve the victory for the Bearcats.

Geneva picked up an unearned run in the third inning of game two and added four runs in the top of the fourth inning to stake a 5-0 lead over SVC. Geneva got a solo home run, a two-run double and a run on a wild pitch in the fourth.

The Bearcats had a few opportunities to chip away at the deficit, putting two runners on in the fourth and sixth innings but failed to score. Trailing 6-0 and down to their final at bat, the Bearcats scored three runs in the seventh.

Morrone was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second on a pinch hit single by Adam Holliday. Fox then delivered a three-run home run, his first home run and third of his career, trimming the Bearcats deficit to 6-3 and knocking out the Geneva starter. However, the Geneva bullpen retired the final two batters to gain the split.

Fox and Vater were the bright spots offensively in game two, as each recorded multi-hit efforts in the loss. Vater went 6-for-11 in the series with three RBIs and a run scored.

Matt Whittaker took the loss in game two, working 3.2 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits but walked four. Whittaker dropped to 1-3 on the year.

The Bearcats currently sit at 8-7 in PAC play and 15-13 overall. With the split, Geneva moved to 3-14 in the league and 8-19 overall.

Saint Vincent returns to action with a PAC doubleheader at first place Thomas More on Tuesday, April 19. First pitch against the Saints is slated for 1 p.m. in Kentucky.
