LATROBE, Pa. (April 2) - The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-12 decision to Transylvania University in a battle of the top two teams in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference standings.
In a game in which Saint Vincent built a sizeable lead throughout the first half, Transylvania slowly worked their way back into the game, using the momentum to capture the big comeback win.
Things started out well for the Bearcats, as they scored the first five goals of the contest.
Hannah Carroll opened the scoring with an unassisted goal three-plus minutes in.
Maggie Nelson and
Helena Shoplik added the next two scores, making it 3-0.
Sarah Wallerstedt and Nelson then each added goals off assists from Carroll.
After Transylvania got on the board with an unassisted tally, SVC rattled off three more goals to take a commanding 8-1 lead with 6:27 to play in the half. Carroll sandwiched two goals around a goal by
Jess Heuler. The visiting Pioneers responded with the next four goals, cutting the deficit to 8-5 at the 1:38 mark. Carroll stopped the momentum momentarily, answering with a goal off an assist from Nelson with 27 seconds left in the half. The fourth goal by Carroll made it 9-5 at the break.
The two teams traded the first four scores of the second half. Shoplik scored to make it 10-6 early in the second half, helping her record her 100th point of her career. After Nelson scored to give SVC a 11-7 edge, Transylvania scored four goals over the next eight minutes to tie the game at 11-11.
Wallerstedt helped SVC regain the lead at 12-11 off a pass from Carroll with 14:29. The goal was the 100th career goal for Wallerstedt. However, that was the last lead for SVC as the Pioneers scored the final three goals of the match to seal up the win.
Transylvania held a 32-24 shot advantage over SVC, including 28-17 on goal. SVC committed 20 turnovers to just 14 for Transy. Both teams struggled at times with clearing, 9-17 for SVC and 8-14 for the Pioneers. Transy held a slight 15-13 edge in draw controls.
Carroll led the offense with seven points (four goals, three assists) in the loss. Nelson and Shoplik each recorded four points. Freshman
Maria Franey made 14 saves in net for SVC.
The loss dropped SVC to 3-1 in the conference and 3-7 overall. The win extended Transylvania's winning streak to nine (3-0 ORLC, 9-2 overall.
The Bearcats return to action Sunday when they host Muskingum University at 2 p.m. The contest will serve as Senior Day for the Bearcats.
