PHOTO GALLERY LATROBE, Pa. (April 3) - For the second straight day, the Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team saw a lead slip away late, falling 11-10 to visiting Muskingum University on Senior Day.
The Bearcats started slow, quickly falling behind 4-0 to start the game. Sophomore
Maggie Nelson got SVC on the board with an unassisted score at the 19:41 mark of the first half. The score by Nelson was her 100th career goal and 34th this season.
After Muskingum scored again to take a 5-1 edge, Saint Vincent rattled off six straight goals over the next 15 minutes to take a 7-5 advantage. Nelson and junior
Hannah Carroll combined for five goals during the run while sophomore
Katie Stallings chipped in the other score. The visiting Muskies tallied the final goal of the half to make it 7-6 SVC after 30 minutes.
Muskingum scored the first two goals of the second half to regain the lead at 8-7. That is when Nelson tried to will the Bearcats to the win, scoring the next three goals, pushing SVC back in front at 10-8 with 11:51 to play. However, that was the last SVC goal of the game and Muskingum would tally the final three to take the win.
As a team, Saint Vincent out-shot Muskingum 23-19 in the game, although each team recorded 16 shots on goal. Both teams had 10 successful clears and turnovers were virtually even, with SVC committing 18 to 17 for the Muskies.
Nelson totaled seven points to lead all scorers (six goals, one assist). Carroll chipped in four points (three goals, one assist) while Stallings added the other score.
Junior
Emma Weaver helped lead the defense with five ground balls and five caused turnovers. Freshman goalie
Maria Franey made five saves in the loss.
Saint Vincent (3-8) returns to action when they travel to Hanover (Ind.) on Saturday, April 9. Start time is slated for 2 p.m.
