Strong pitching lifts SVC to sweep at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 6) - The Saint Vincent softball team swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference road doubleheader at Grove City. The Bearcats won game one 6-2 before adding a 5-1 victory in game two.

With the sweep, SVC improves to 3-1 in the PAC and 15-7 overall. Meanwhile, Grove City drops to 0-2 in the league and 2-8 overall in 2016.

In game one, senior outfielder Sarah Swettlen played a big role in giving SVC an early lead. Swettlen came up with a clutch two-out bases-clearing triple to give SVC a 3-0 advantage in the second inning. The run scoring extra base hit scored Kelsey Lineberger, Nicole Adisey and Samantha Emert.

The Bearcats added to the lead when junior catcher Breanne Wallace connected on a three-run home run in the top of the third, making it 6-0 SVC. Sophomores Emily Duerr and Shelby Noel joined Wallace in scoring on the homer.

Grove City scored two runs in the seventh inning but could get no closer, as SVC took the contest by a 6-2 margin.

Emert took the win in game one, moving her season record to 8-2. The junior pitcher worked seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits. Emert also struck out six and walked two. Offensively,  Duerr and Emert each recorded two hits.

In game two, Saint Vincent got on the board with an RBI double by sophomore Courtney Patterson, which scored freshman catcher Kelsey Hunter. The Patterson double gave SVC a 1-0 lead that they would cling to all the way until the seventh inning.

After a few miscues by the Wolverines, SVC added four unearned insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Following a two-out Grove City error that kept the inning alive, Noel walked to force home Morgan Murphy, making it 2-0. Duerr then cleared the bases with a three-run double, putting SVC up 6-0. Grove City scored a run in the bottom of the frame to close out the scoring at 6-1.

Patterson put together a solid game two at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Meanwhile, Swettlen also recorded a multi-hit effort out of the leadoff spot in the lineup.

Duerr continued to be dominant in the circle, moving to 7-3 for the season. The sophomore worked all seven innings, allowing one run on four innings. Duerr walked two and struck out one.

Saint Vincent is scheduled to return to PAC action on Saturday, April 9, when they host Thiel for a doubleheader. Start time is slated for 1 p.m.
