The Saint Vincent women's bowling team ended the first half of its inaugural season with a 3-0 loss on the road at NCAA-II Daemen College in Buffalo, New York.
The Bearcats finish the semester with a record of 15-9.
SVC struggled from the outset in game one, despite a 7-strike performance from freshman
Cassie Murcko. Murcko finished the game with three strikes in the 10th frame for a team-high 187.
Samm Firestone threw a 186, but it wasn't enough as the game ended with a score of 853-787 in favor of the Wildcats. However, it was determined that Daemen made an illegal substitution midway through the game, and they were given scores of 0 in frames 6-10 for one bowler. The penalty amounted to 64 pins, officially making the final score 789-787, good enough for a 2-pin Daemen win.
In the second traditional game, Firestone and
Dani Koehler each started with a pair of strike, while
Emily Duerr struck in frames two and three. SVC built a lead which they held until the 6th frame, but had three open frames in each of the sixth and seventh frames and could not recover, falling by a score of 916-801.
In the first game of the best-of-seven Baker series, SVC fell behind by 50 pins through seven frames, but finished the game with four strikes in a row, one from Firestone and three from Koehler. The margin was too much to make up, as SVC fell 168-151, but SVC's momentum carried over to game two. After Murcko and Duerr spared the first two frames,
Rachael Heater, Firestone and Koehler followed with strikes. The Bearcats finished with a season-high Baker game, winning 224-158 to tie the match at 1-1.
However, the team struggled in the next two games to fall behind 3-1. A late rally in game five fell one pin short (132-131), giving Daemen a 4-1 victory. With the win, Daemen is now 18-4 on the year.
The Bearcats are off for Christmas break, and will return to action on Saturday, January 13 in the two-day Buckeye Baker Classic, hosted by Ohio State University.
