LATROBE, Pa. (April 12) - A dominant offensive performance led the Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team to a 22-7 victory over Franciscan University at Chuck Noll Field.
A total of 12 Bearcats scored in the non-conference victory over the Barons. Saint Vincent led 9-4 after the first quarter and 13-6 at halftime in a contest in which the Bearcats never trailed. SVC would outscore Franciscan by a 9-1 margin in the second half.
Four different Bearcats scored early on as SVC built a 4-1 lead with 8:54 left on the first quarter clock. However, the visiting Barons would answer with three consecutive goals to tie the contest at 4-4. Saint Vincent would tally the final five scores of the quarter, including two goals from
Jeremy Kennedy and man-up goals from
Hunter Sharp and
Mitchell Bachman.
SVC continued its run with three straight goals to open the second quarter, getting scores from
Ben Price,
Ian Irvin and
Joe Puvel. After two Franciscan goals,
Brendon Masten found the back of the net for the second time during the first half. Masten's goal gave Saint Vincent a 13-6 edge at the halftime break.
Kennedy scored four of the five Bearcat goals during the third period as the Bearcats pushed the lead into double digits.
Anthony Hogeback also scored and dished out an assist in the third. Freshman
Stone Harberstroh recorded the final two scores of the day for SVC, making the margin 22-7.
Kennedy paced the offense in the victory, scoring a season-high six goals. Sharp, Mueser, Harberstroh, Puvel and Masten each added two scores in the contest.
John Wohlin won 13-of-20 face-offs and picked up nine ground balls. Hogeback and
Michael Grus each had five ground ball pickups.
Freshman
Kevin Tregoning made three saves in goal during the first half, while classmate
Brandon Martin made seven saves during the second half in net.
The victory was the fourth straight overall and fifth in the last six contests for Saint Vincent, who moves to 5-6 overall. Meanwhile, the Barons dropped to 5-6 for 2017.
Saint Vincent hosts Otterbein University for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, April 18. The contest is slated for a 5 p.m. start.
