The Saint Vincent softball team earned a pair of shutout victories at Chatham University behind two strong all-around team performances.
Samantha Emert earned her 50
th career victory in game one, giving up just two hits in five innings, walking two and striking out five.
The offensive support came right from the start, as
Mackenzie Gostomski doubled to open the game, and scored when
Shelby Noel hit a home run which would turn out to be the game-winning hit.
Rachel Harenchar homered in the second inning to increase the lead to 3-0.
In the third, Noel led off with her second home run of the game to make the score 4-0.
SVC broke the game open in the fourth, tallying six runs on six hits. Noel again supplied the big hit, a bases-loaded triple. Harenchar later doubled home two more runs.
Victoria Culver had a two-run double in the fifth, part of a three-run inning that resulted in the game being ended early by rule.
Noel was 3-for-3 with 6 runs batted in and four runs scored, while Harenchar was 3-4 and drove in three runs.
In game two, Gostomski again got things started for SVC, leading off the game with a single. She was replaced on the basepaths by
Kelly Flaherty, who grounded into a fielder's choice. Flaherty later scored on a single by Noel. After
Kelsey Hunter reached on an error,
Emily Duerr singled home Noel with SVC's second run of the game.
Up 2-0 in the top of the third, SVC doubled its lead on one swing, as
Kelsey Lineberger hit a 2-run home run that scored Hunter, who had singled.
The Bearcats added three more runs in the fourth, as Noel hit a 2-run triple and Hunter later had a sacrifice fly that made the score 8-0.
Emert again went the 5-inning distance, giving up just three hits, walking one and striking out two. Emert is now 13-5 on the year. Noel finished the afternoon with 9 RBI. With two more triples, Noel now has 9 for the season, which is tied for the most in all of Division III Softball.
Saint Vincent is now 9-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference and 16-12 overall, while Chatham drops to 2-14 and 6-27 overall.
The Bearcats close out the home portion of their schedule with a PAC doubleheader against Waynesburg University on Monday, April 24. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
