Bearcats fall short against Geneva in PAC Tournament Quarterfinals

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Oct. 16) - The Saint Vincent women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to host Geneva College in the quarterfinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Championships.

Meeting for the second time in the last week, the Golden Tornadoes and Bearcats battled for a berth in Friday's semifinals. Just like they did last week, Geneva won six of the nine matches over Saint Vincent to take the victory.

The Bearcats opened the match by claiming just one of the three doubles matches. The lone SVC win came at first doubles, as the tandem of Lucy Bujdos and Maura Skelley earned a commanding 8-3 win. Autumn Miller and Lisa Marthens suffered a narrow 8-5 loss at second doubles while Livia Wentworth and Lauren Hartner lost 8-3 at third doubles.

Skelley finished off a productive day, as the freshman claimed a straight set win over Felicity Orndoff at third singles. Skelley won with scores of 6-2 and 6-4.

Wentworth recorded the final Saint Vincent win, fighting back to defeat Michelle Kisiel in a third set tiebreaker. After falling 7-6 (7-3) in the opening set, Wentworth won 6-2 in the second set to force a tiebreaker. In the third, Wentworth pulled out the victory by winning 10-7.

In total, four of the six singles matches went to third set tiebreakers. Bujdos fell at first singles by scores of 4-6, 6-4 and 9-11. After second singles, Miller won 6-2 in the opening set, the senior would then fall 6-4 in the second and 10-7 in the third set tiebreaker. Kate Palko would open with a 6-4 win at sixth singles before dropping the second 7-5 and then suffering a 10-5 loss in the third set.

The loss drops Saint Vincent to 6-7 overall, while Geneva improves to 8-5. The Golden Tornadoes advance to face top-seeded Grove City College in Friday's semifinals at Washington & Jefferson College.

Saint Vincent wraps up the fall season with a non-conference match against Pitt-Greensburg on Oct. 27. Start time is set for 12 p.m.
