Hot shooting helps Bearcats roll past Grove City, 78-62



GROVE CITY, Pa. (Dec. 1) - David Stephen poured in a career-high 30 points to help the Saint Vincent men's basketball team to a commanding 78-62 victory over Grove City at the College Arena in Mercer County. 

The Bearcats never trailed as they put together a solid all-around performance to win their fourth straight game. 

With the score tied at 9-9 at the 13:38 mark of the first half, Saint Vincent took the league for good on a three-pointer by Mike Simmons. A little later, holding a 25-22 lead, Saint Vincent finished the half on an 18-11 spurt to take a 43-33 advantage into halftime.

The Bearcats pushed the lead into double figures for the first time when Stephen connected on a three in front of a layup by Ryan Dutton, making the score 38-28 with 1:19 left in the half. Stephen tacked on another three before SVC took the double-digit advantage into halftime. 

Saint Vincent continued to roll in the second half, holding a double-digit edge for the remainder of the game. In the early stages, Simmons drained a three before Stephen tallied treys on back-to-back possessions to make ti 52-37 SVC with 16:53 to play. The Bearcat lead swelled to as many as 25 points during the second session. Stephen drained a three to give SVC a 78-53 lead with just 4:55 left. 

Tom Kromka tallied 15 points for another strong effort, while Dutton (11) and Simmons (10) rounded out the quartet in double figures. Stephen also pulled down five rebounds and picked up three assists. Andrew Reed recorded four assists to pace SVC in that category. 

SVC shot 48 percent from the field, including 52.9 percent (9-17) from behind the three-point line.

The win moves Saint Vincent to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the PAC. Meanwhile, Grove City falls to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in league play. 

SVC hosts Thiel College on Wednesday, Dec. 5. Start time is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside the Carey Center.
