The Bearcats were 7-3 winners over Anderson University in game one of a doubleheader in Auburndale, Florida, then dropped game two by a score of 18-12 in extra innings.
In game one, the Bearcats got on the board in the top of the first inning, as Stone Holtman singled with one out then moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt that sailed down the right field line.Â
Matt Morrone walked and stole second, putting two runners into scoring position.Â
Patrick McElfish then singled home both runners, and hustled to second on the late throw home. McElfish later scored on a double by
Bobby Finn, putting SVC in front 3-0.
Â
SVC doubled its lead in the second inning, with all of the action taking place after two outs were recording.Â
Tanner Yard singled and moved to second when Holtzman drew a walk.  Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, then Morrone hit a 2-run single. After Morrone stole second, McElfish singled him home to make it 6-0.
Â
It was more than enough for SVC starter
Matt Whittaker, who gave up a pair of runs in the second but settled down to get through innings three through five. After McElfish hit a sacrifice fly to drive home SVC's seventh run, the Ravens got the first two runners on base against Whittaker in the sixth inning.Â
Brenden Lavely came out of the bullpen and got two quick outs before an error allowed a run to score. Lavely then got out of the sixth, and benefitted from fine defensive work from Morrone in centerfield in the seventh, securing the win.
Â
McElfish led the offense with two hits and 4 RBI, in support of Whittaker (1-0).
In game two, the Ravens got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the first off SVC freshman
Ryan Augustine. However, the Bearcats stormed back in the bottom of the inning. Holtzman singled to right with one out, then Morrone followed with a single. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, McElfish drew a walk to load the bases. Kilkeary tied the game with a sacrifice fly, and Finn gave SVC a 3-1 lead with a single that drove home two runs. After Finn stole second,
Ramon Milke followed with a single that plated Finn.Â
Parker Janosko then doubled to right center, scoring Milke, giving SVC a 5-1 lead after one inning.
Â
The Ravens chased Augustine in the second inning, eventually building an 8-5 lead after the top of the third.
Â
In the bottom of the third, Kilkeary led off with a double down the left field line, and scored on a single up the middle by Finn, making it 8-6. Milke then singled, and Janosko drew a walk to load the bases. After one out, Yard singled to right, advancing everyone one base and making the score 8-7. Holtzman then singled to center, again moving every ahead 90 feet, scoring Milke with the game-tying run.
Â
With two outs, McElfish was hit by a pitch, giving SVC a 9-8 lead, then Kilkeary reached on a catcher's interference call, putting SVC in front by two.
Â
Once again, the lead was short-lived, as the Bearcats gave up three runs in the top of the fourth, on three straight walks, a wild pitch, and a single. The Ravens added a run in the sixth, taking a 12-10 lead.
Â
The Bearcats were down to their final chance in the bottom of the 7th, and made the most of it. Milke led off with a single, then moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, pinch hitter
Nick LaCava hit a towering shot to right center field that hit the bottom of the fence, ending up with an RBI triple. Yard followed with a double down the right field line that tied the game, 12-12.
Â
The game remained tied into the 9th inning thanks to strong relief work from
Nick Hesselbirg, but after a leadoff strikeout in the top of the 9th, the Ravens got a pair of runners aboard on a walk and a hit batsman. After a pitching change, an error quickly loaded the bases. Two straight walks then put the Ravens in front, 14-12. After another pitching change, a bases clearing triple gave Anderson a 17-12 lead. A double then scored Anderson's 18th run of the game.
SVC is now 3-4 on the season and will face Albion College on Saturday (March 10) to conclude the Florida trip.
