Matt Whittaker earned the win, and
Bobby Finn supplied a first-inning home run to lead SVC to a 6-4 win over Geneva in game one, and a walkoff single by
Shane Fajt lifted the team to a 6-5 win in game two.
With the victories, SVC is now 4-4 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play, while Geneva drops to 5-3.
The Bearcats scored three times in the top of the first and never looked back in game one.
After
Tanner Yard led off with a hit batsman, he stole second and moved to third when the throw went into the outfield.
Matt Morrone brought him home with a sacrifice fly, giving SVC a quick 1-0 lead. After
Ramon Milke walked, Finn tagged a fastball and deposited it over the left field fence for a 3-0 lead.
The Bearcats added to the lead in the second, as
Joe Rudzinski led off with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Shane Fajt. After Yard walked, Milke hit a deep line drive to left just out of the reach of the Geneva left fielder, resulting in a 2-run double that made it a 5-0 game.
In the third,
Eddie Kilkeary was hit by a pitch then moved to third on a single by
Patrick McElfish.
Nick LaCava followed with an RBI single to make it 6-0.
It would stay that way until the fourth, when the visitors got on the board with a walk, stolen base, wild pitch and sacrifice fly off SVC starter
Matt Whittaker.
Despite giving up a run, Whittaker kept his no-hitter intact until the top of the 6th, when he gave up a leadoff single to Geneva's Forrest Beighley.
Geneva added two runs in the 8th, chasing Whittaker, but
Ben Davis came on and got a key double play to lessen the threat, followed by a 2-out groundout to end the inning.
Davis gave up an unearned run in the 9th inning, but SVC held on for the 6-4 win.
Whittaker worked 7+ innings, giving up just two hits. SVC managed just seven hits, one each by 7 different players, but took advantage of six hit batsmen.
In game two, SVC got on the board in the bottom of the first, thanks to a pair of walks and a wild pitch. In the third, the team added to its lead on an RBI double to the left field fence by Finn that scored Yard, who had left off with a single.
In the fourth,
Parker Janosko singled to lead off, then moved to third on a hit-and-run single by
Shane Fajt. A wild pitch then scored Janosko, putting SVC in front, 3-0. Later in the inning, with runners at the corners after Yard walked,
Matt Morrone's grounder to third was misplayed, with Fajt scoring on the error to make it a 4-0 game.
After the Golden Tornadoes got a pair of runs back in the top of the fifth, SVC drew four straight walks after two outs in the bottom of the inning, increasing the lead to 5-2.
However, the visitors started the 6th inning with back-to-back doubles and a single, eventually scoring three times to tie the game.
Ben Davis came on to get the last two outs of the inning in relief of starter
Ryan Augustine.
The game remained tied into the late innings, when SVC received strong relief work from
Matt Evans to keep the game at 5-5 going to the bottom of the 9th.
Nick Amatucci led off with a pinch hit single that was nearly caught in left field on a diving attempt. Pinch runner
Tom Bash then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Joe Rudzinski. That set up Fajt's walk-off, game-winning single down the right field line.
Evans (1-1) earned the victory, working 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Mark Locke also threw an inning and a third of scoreless relief prior to Evans coming out of the bullpen.
For the second game in a row, SVC had a total of 7 hits, with Fajt as the lone Bearcat with two hits.
SVC will return to action on Saturday, April 14 at Waynesburg University. First pitch is set for 1PM.
