WASHINGTON, Pa. (Sept. 21) - The Saint Vincent women's tennis team suffered a tough 5-4 setback at Washington & Jefferson College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match.
Saint Vincent opened the match by taking two of the three doubles contests.
Lucy Bujdos and
Maura Skelley gave SVC an 8-5 victory at first doubles while
Autumn Miller and
Lisa Marthens picked up an 8-2 victory at second doubles.
Livia Wentworth and
Lauren Hartner suffered an 8-3 loss at third doubles.
The host Presidents won four of the six singles matches to edge the Bearcats. Saint Vincent picked up wins at third singles and fifth singles. Skelley completed a 2-0 day when she breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at third singles. Wentworth won by a 6-3, 6-2 score at the fifth singles spot. Marthens fought hard at fourth singles, forcing a third set tiebreaker before falling by a match score of 6-2, 4-6 and 10-5.
The loss drops SVC to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. W&J move to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the PAC.
Saint Vincent hosts Bethany College in the Green Match on Saturday, Sept. 22. The contest is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start at the SVC Courts.
