Swim teams open season with dual victories over Bethany


FULL RESULTS

The SVC men's and women's swim teams opened the 2019-20 season with dominant performances over Bethany College.  The men were victorious by a score of 205-38, while the women were 213-23 winners.

The men would begin their meet on top, with Zach Baum leading Jarod Palmer, Danny Whirlow, and Kevin Martin to victory in the 200 Medley Relay. Their time was 1:46.65.

Individually, four Bearcat men stood out. Baum won the 100 Backstroke (55.93) and the 100 Freestyle (48.80), while K. Martin won the 200 Backstroke (2:16.45) and the 200 IM (2:10.35). John Martin won the 200 Freestyle (1:55.31) and the 50 Freestyle (23.53). Finally, Kris Smith won 200 Breaststroke (2:27.20) and the 100 Breaststroke (1:05.16).

In the 1000 Freestyle, Josh Ligus finished first, hitting the wall at 11:33.60. Michael Schollaert was second at 12:08.36.

Noah Schollaert would narrowly out-swim Whirlow to win the 200 Butterfly; their times were a 2:09.00 and a 2:10.00, respectively.

Benon Brewer took the top spot in the 500 Freestyle. His time was a 5:26.84.

Ethan Yant was victorious in the 100 Fly, clocking in at 58.18. J. Martin would finish close behind him at 59.28 to take second place.

Baum would later lead another quartet to victory, this time in the 200 Freestyle. The team included Andrew Rectenwald, Seth White, and Palmer. Their time was 1:36.60.

The women's team similarly opened their meet with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay. The quartet of Erica Steele, Abigail Brannon, Cara Luallen, and Nicolette Smith clocked in at 2:05.48.

Individually, the women's team had three stand-out swimmers. Claire Kenna won the 1000 Freestyle (12:24.53) and the 200 Breaststroke (2:47.48). Carly Grove won the 200 Freestyle (2:14.04) and the 500 Freestyle (6:13.67). Finally, Lauren Connors won the 50 Freestyle (25.46), the 200 Backstroke (2:16.86), and the 100 Fly (1:01.49).

Steele and Smith would both be on top again, in the 100 Backstroke and the 100 Breaststroke, respectively. Steele's time was a 1:07.85, and Smith's was a 1:23.00.

Katie Kozy claimed the top spot in the 200 Butterfly with a 2:25.91, while Lauren Krecota took first place in the 100 Freestyle in a time of 1:02.10. In second place was Sara Basala, who finished at 1:03.71.

In the 200 Freestyle Relay, the team of Steele, Elise Debrot, Basala, and Kozy claimed victory with a 1:51.13.

Both teams go to 1-0 in the PAC. The Bearcats' next meet will be on Saturday, October 26th, at 1 p.m., at the University of Mount Union.
