The SVC men's basketball team won its third straight game, posting an 82-70 victory over Carlow University on the road in Pittsburgh in a non-conference tilt.
David Stephen led the way with 28 points in 29 minutes of play as the Bearcats improved to 3-1 on the season.
The Bearcats took an early 4-0 lead after a jumper by
Drew Normandin, but the Celtics later claimed a one-point lead, 9-8, with 15:45 left in the first half. A three pointer put Carlow up by five, 17-12, at the 12:23 mark, and the hosts continued to hold a lead for the next three minutes.
The Bearcats later went on a 6-point run, which included two points from Stephen followed by four straight from
Cletus Helton, taking a 24-22 advantage with 7:10 left in the half. Another score from Helton, and four more points by Stephen helped SVC build its lead to ten, 37-27, just under four minutes later, but the hosts battled back and made it a 4-point game, 40-36 in favor of Saint Vincent, at the half.
Carlow (0-4) opened the second half with a bucket that made it a 2-point game, but it was as close as they would get. A three by
Andrew Reed increased the lead to ten, 53-43 near the 15-minute mark, and the lead was still in double figures six minutes later after another Reed three made the score 64-54.
However, the game's next five points belonged to the hosts, as they cut the Bearcat lead in half with 6:22 to go. With 3:47 left, the margin was down to just four points, 69-65, before a
Collin Neville jumper made it a 6-point game.
After Carlow again closed the gap to four, but a Stephen score made the score 75-68 after hitting a pair of free throws with 2:13 remaining. The Bearcats final 7 points would also come from the free throw line, as the team held on for the 12-point win.
Following Stephen on the scoresheet, Reed had a career-high 18 points, while Helton added 10. Helton added 8 rebounds, equaling his career high.
Brendan Hempstead grabbed 6 rebounds. As a team, SVC drew 30 fouls, and hit 25 of 42 free throws on the night.
The Bearcats return to the Carey Center on Saturday evening (November 16), hosting Pitt-Greensburg in a non-conference game at 6:00.
