Fresh off a Player of the Week performance in the season opener,
Jenna Lafko set a new career high with 26 points as the Bearcats women's basketball team cruised to a 108-83 victory over Penn State-Altoona on the road.
It was the team's highest single-game point total since scoring 114 points in a February, 2014 game against Bethany College.
The Lions hit a pair of threes early to take a 6-2 lead in the opening minutes, but a layup by Lafko near the 6-minute mark of the first quarter put the Bearcats in front to stay. SVC had posted 31 points by the end of the first quarter, opening a 12-point advantage.
Early in the second, the hosts got as close as 10 points (31-21), but the Bearcats went on a 12-2 run to increase the lead to 20 at the 6:08 mark of the quarter. A jumper by
Erin Giancola with 1:56 to go made the score 55-34, and the team took that 21-point lead into the locker room at the half, 57-36.
A
Paige Montrose layup near the midpoint of the third quarter allowed the lead to top 30 points for the first time, 69-38, and the final basket of the third quarter, by
Bri Van Volkenburg, ran the lead to 41, at 88-47.
Stephanie Vaughn hit a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter to take the lead to its highest point, 43 (91-48), but the rest of the quarter belonged to the hosts, as they closed the gap to 25 by the end of the game.
Lafko's 26 points included an 11-for-13 shooting performance from the field. She also had 7 assists and 5 rebounds.
Taylor Boring added 12 points, while
Madison Kollar and Giancola each had 10 points. Giancola had a perfect night from the floor, going 5-for-5. Montrose had a team-high 6 rebounds, to go along with 4 steals.
Saint Vincent is now 2-0 on the season, while Altoona falls to 1-1. The Bearcats will return to action on Tuesday (November 19), traveling to Berea, Ohio to face Baldwin Wallace University in non-conference action.
