The Saint Vincent women's bowling team captured its first tournament championship in school history, sweeping all four rounds of the Altoona Quad Tournament, hosted by Penn State-Altoona.
The Bearcats started the day with a five-game Baker total pins matchup against La Roche University. SVC shot a 176 in the first game, opening a quick 59-pin advantage. In the fourth game of the set, SVC shot a 205, which included 8 strikes. The Bearcats won all five games individually, pulling away to an 841-636 victory. Â
Next up was Pitt-Bradford, and SVC had a pair of splits early in the game, and only finished with a 131, but it was good enough for a 30-pin advantage. The Bearcats put it all together by game three of the series, as
Meghan Christman,
Morgan Barlock,
Olivia Emmonds and
Jessica Guesman threw strikes on the first four shots. Anchor
Dani Koehler later finished the game with three strikes in the 10th, giving the Bearcats 9 strikes in the game, good for a 243 score. SVC then threw a 197 in the final game of the set, making the final score 898-647.
The third round featured Saint Vincent against host Penn State-Altoona. The Bearcats shot a 181 to open the series, and went on to win 791-621.
Saint Vincent then advanced to the championship match, a best-of-7 Baker series against second place Pitt-Bradford. The Bearcats won game one by a score of 167-146. Moving to the right lane of the pair for game two, SVC threw four strikes in a row - one each from Barlock,
Mercedes Belch, Emmonds and Guesman - and cruised to a 214-126 win to go up 2-0 in the series. SVC had three splits in the third game, playing on the left lane, and lost, making it a 2-1 series. Moving to the right lane, SVC once again found success, winning the fourth game 200-154. The Bearcats then clinched the championship with a 158-130 win in the final game, coming back from a deficit in the 7th frame.Â
Abby Kyle spared the 8th, Belch struck in the 9th, then Koehler threw two strikes in the 10th to seal the win.Â
For the day, Christman topped all bowlers with a per-frame average of 18.06, a game equivalent of 180.6. Emmonds finished the day with an average of 17.96, followed by Belch (17.45), Guesman (17.34) and Barlock (16.09).
Saint Vincent is now 18-1 on the season, and will return to action on Tuesday evening (November 19), hosting Penn State-Behrend at 6PM. Â
