Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

SVC opens basketball season with tournament loss to Ursinus

The Bearcat men's basketball team opened the 2019-20 season with a 73-58 loss on the road against Ursinus College in the opening round of the Lycoming College Tournament.

David Stephen and Andrew Reed each scored 10 points, while Drew Normandin had a game-high 11 rebounds, but the Bearcats were unable to overcome a pair of second half runs by Ursinus.

Three-point shots by Kyle Pope, Tom Neugebauer and Stephen gave SVC an early 9-4 lead, but the advantage would then bounce back and forth throughout much of the first half.

A Saint Vincent turnover led to a three that gave Ursinus a 13-12 lead at the 14:20 point of the half, and the lead soon grew to seven, 19-12, after a pair of free throws.

The Bearcats then returned the favor, starting a run with a pair of Normandin free throws, then later tying the game at 19-19 on a three by Reed.

A Normandin jumper put SVC in front, 30-29 at the 2:25 mark, but there would be just one more shot made the rest of the half, and it belonged to Ursinus, as they took a 31-30 lead into the locker room.

Stephen put SVC in front just over a minute into the second half, 32-31, but it would prove to be the team's final lead of the evening.  A 10-point Ursinus run covering just over two minutes made it a 41-32 game.

Saint Vincent cut the gap to just three, 44-41, on another three by Reed, but Ursinus then went on a 17-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Following Reed and Stephen on the scoresheet was Toddy Goodwin, who tallied 9 points off the bench in just 7 minutes of play.   Ryan Hughes of Ursinus led all scorers with 25 points.

SVC will wrap up the weekend tournament by facing Penn State-Schuylkill on Saturday (November 9) at 1:00.
