Bearcats score late to win season opener


The Saint Vincent College women's basketball it's 2019-20 season against Carnegie Mellon University. The Bearcats scored in the final 15 seconds to win, 63-62. 

SVC improves to 1-0 overall while the Tartans drop to 0-1 to open the year.

Saint Vincent opened the game with a 13-2 run with two layups from senior Kayla Slovenec. Carnegie Mellon got the difference to single-digits but the Bearcats held the advantage through the first period, 18-12.

The second quarter was similar to the first with SVC controlling the play as it scored the first seven points capped off by a three from junior Jenna Lafko. Trailing 25-12, the Tartans eventually pulled within five but a three-pointer by senior Taylor Boring and a layup from Lafko gave the Bearcats the 32-22 lead at the half. 

Lafko led all scorers with 11 points at the break while junior Carlee Kilgus added six more points. Saint Vincent was being out rebounded by CMU 24-11 but the Tartans committed 12 turnovers compared to eight for SVC.

The Bearcats opened the second half with back-to-back baskets from junior Madison Kollar to extend the lead to 14 (36-22). Carnegie Mellon cut the deficit to nine but Kilgus and Slovenec hit from three-point range in consecutive possessions to lead 42-27.

The Tartans chipped away at Saint Vincent's lead throughout the quarter including an 8-0 run to trail by six (44-38) with 3:27 remaining in the third. Boring ended the run with two free throws but CMU closed out the period with two field goals and a free throw to only trail 46-43 going into the fourth.

SVC opened the final period of regulation with a jumper in the paint by Kilgus and two Kollar free throws. The Tartans responded with six-straight and took its first lead of the game, 51-50. The Bearcats answered with good layups from Kollar and senior Paige Montrose to give the hosts a three-point lead (54-51) with 5:47 to go in regulation.

Carnegie Mellon got within a point but a three from Kilgus and a jumper from Lafko extended the lead for Saint Vincent, 59-53. CMU scored nine of the next 11 points to regain the advantage, 62-61, with 34 seconds to go in the fourth.

The Bearcats called a timeout after moving the ball past half court to set up the offense. After inbounding the ball, Kollar made a move on the right block to score of an entry pass from Lafko to give SVC the lead (63-62) with 12 seconds on the clock. The Tartans had their chance but a missed jumper and a defensive rebound by Kollar sealed the win for Saint Vincent. 

Lafko led the Bearcats with a game-high 17 points and totaled six assists, four rebounds and three steals. Kilgus tallied 14 points while Kollar finished the afternoon with 12 points and seven rebounds. Saint Vincent rebounded 37 times compared to 40 for Carnegie Mellon but SVC outscored CMU 23-18 off turnovers.

Saint Vincent will travel to Penn State-Altoona on Friday, Nov. 15 for a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
