The Chatham Cougars defeated the Saint Vincent men's basketball team by a score of 54-51 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference semifinal game at the Carey Center.
David Stephen got the scoring started with a baseline jumper just over 30 seconds into play.

Chatham's Will Sandherr hit a three to give the visitors their first lead of the game, 3-2.  The next six points belonged to Saint Vincent, but Sandherr came back with six straight points to put the Cougars in front, 9-8 with 13:25 remaining in the first.

The Bearcats retook the lead at the 10:22 mark on a putback by
Drew Normandin, but a spin move from Anthony Bomar led to a layup that returned the lead to the Cougars at the midway point of the half, 13-12.

Four straight points by Marc Wells on inside passes gave Chatham at 17-14 lead with 6:35 on the clock.

With 1:21 to go in the half, a layup by
Tom Kromka and a pair of free throws by
Ryan Dutton put SVC in front, 22-21, but Isaiah Brown scored at the buzzer on a driving floater that put the Cougars in front 23-22 at the half.

Dutton scored one minute into the second half to give the Bearcats a brief lead, but the Cougars again battled back, with four more points from Wells making it a 30-26 game.

Kromka then scored the game's next three points, on a free throw and a contested layup in the paint, making it 30-29 at the 15:45 mark.

A three by Brown and a jumper by Sandherr gave the Cougars a 35-29 advantage, and the lead grew to eight (40-33) after three free throws by Nasir Alexander with 11:39 remaining.

Strong play from Kromka kept the game close, as he scored at the 8-minute mark to cut the SVC deficit to just three, 43-40, and a Stephen drive from the baseline made it a one-point game with 7:08 on the clock.

Scores from Dutton and Stephen put SVC in front, 46-45, with just over five minutes remaining, but Sandherr hit another three to give the visitors the lead, 48-46. Â

The teams traded free throws, making the score 50-48, but Sandherr again scored, driving the lane with one minute left to make it 52-48.  A turnover led to a fastbreak score by Chatham's Buzz Walker, but Stephen countered with a quick three off an
Andrew Reed pass to make it 54-51 with 36 ticks remaining.

A turnover by Chatham gave SVC the ball with 30 seconds left, but the Bearcats were unable to hit a last second shot, giving Chatham the upset win. Â
For Saint Vincent, Kromka led the offense with 18 points, while Stephen added 15 and Dutton contributed 12. Â Kromka and Stephen each grabbed six rebounds.
Sandherr led all scorers on the night with 25 points, while Wells added 10 points and 7 rebounds for the Cougars.
