Lacrosse team falls in overtime in season opener

The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team opened the 2019 season with a tough 11-10 overtime loss on the road in Alliance, Ohio to the University of Mount Union.

The Bearcats tallied the first goal of the game just over six minutes into play, as Frank Casile scored to put SVC in front, 1-0.  Less than three minutes later, Casile scored again, giving the visiting Bearcats a 2-0 lead.

After a Mount Union goal cut the lead in half, Jeremy Kennedy took an early second quarter pass from Danny Tare, finding the net to make the score 3-1.  After a goal by the hosts, Kennedy set up Joe Puvel for a goal at the 5:05 mark of the second.  However, Mount Union answered quickly with a goal just 15 seconds later, then scored again with 2:23 remaining to tie the game, 4-4.

A man-up goal by Mount Union put them in front and it appeared as though they would take the lead into the halftime break, but Zach Novelli saw that time was running low, and released a shot from nearly 70 yards away that somehow got past the goalkeeper.  Novelli's goal came with just one second remaining the half, tying the game, 5-5.

The Raiders (1-1) scored the first goal of the second half to reclaim the lead, but the next three goals of the game belonged to Saint Vincent.  First, it was Kennedy with his second of the day, off an assist by Ben Price, then Casile set up Kennedy for his third of the afternoon at the 4:49 mark.

Tare's first goal as a Bearcat, assisted by Kennedy, came in a man-up situation after a Raider penalty, giving SVC the 8-6 lead with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter.  However, the hosts got a goal back with six seconds on the clock, and it was an 8-7 game headed to the fourth quarter.

Two goals in the first four minutes of the quarter put Mount Union in front, 9-8, but Kennedy responded with a score off a diving shot attempt in front of the net near the six-minute mark.  His fourth goal of the day was assisted by Tyler Condrasky.

The Raiders won the ensuing faceoff, but Brandon Martin came up with a save and put SVC back on the attack. With 4:30 remaining, Tare put the Bearcats in front, 10-9, with his second goal of the day, assisted by Condrasky.

Just over one minute later, the hosts again tied the game on a goal by Hunter Holt, and the score remained tied at the end of regulation.

With 1:06 left in overtime, the Raiders' Alex Kungle scored the game winning goal.

Kennedy led the SVC offense with 4 goals on 9 shots, and added two assists.  Casile and Tare each recorded three points, with two goals and an assist each.  Martin took the loss in the net, posting 13 saves.

For the day, Saint Vincent led UMU in shots, 39-32, but the Raiders recorded a 20-5 advantage in faceoffs.

The Bearcats (0-1) will be back in action on Wednesday (February 27) in Berea, Ohio, facing Baldwin Wallace University.  Game time is 7:00.
