Mount Aloysius sweeps SVC in non-conference play

The Mount Aloysius Mounties earned a 7-5 comeback win over Saint Vincent in the opening game of a softball doubleheader in Cresson, Pennsylvania, then won a close 5-4 contest in game two.

In game one, the hosts scored a pair of runs on a 2-run home run in the first inning off SVC starter Erica Smiley, but the Bearcats came back in the middle innings to take the lead.

Johnna Karas led off the third inning with a double, then scored when Kelsey Tobin reached on an error.  Lauren Miller singled to move Tobin to third, and RBI singles by Sydney Gurneal and Shae Robson brought home two more runs, making it a 3-2 game in favor of the Bearcats.  An inning later, Tobin singled with two outs, and scored on a Miller double to make it 4-2.  Sleith then singled home Miller to give the Bearcats a 3-run lead.

However, Mount Aloysius got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fourth, then added three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead.  The Bearcats got a leadoff walk in the 7th but were unable to score, falling 7-5.

Gurneal had three hits to lead the offense while Miller was 2-for-4.  Riley Assalone (1-3) took the hard-luck loss in relief.

The second game was also close, as Mount Aloysius broke a scoreless tie with a run in the third inning.  SVC tied the game with one swing in the fourth, as Miller hit a home run to make it 1-1.

SVC took the lead in the 5th, when Celia Knappenberger doubled to lead off, moved to third on a groundout by Kelly Flaherty, and scored on a groundout by Assalone.

The Mounties took advantage of a pair of SVC errors and scored three runs in the bottom of the 5th, taking a 4-2 lead.  In the top of the 7th, Flaherty singled with one out.  Later, with the team down to its last out, Karas doubled to left, scoring Flaherty.  Tobin followed with a double, tying the game at 4-4.  SVC managed to get runners at the corners but couldn't add an additional run, sending the game to the bottom of the 7th, tied.

However, the hosts opened the inning with a single, and followed with an RBI double to win the game.

Miller went 3-for-3 to lead the offense.  Knappenberger (4-1) went the distance in the circle, giving up 3 earned runs, suffering her first loss of the season.

The Bearcats are now 7-5 on the season and will return to action on Thursday (March 21), hosting Juniata College.
