VIDEO - BOBBY FINN'S 3HR
Jimmy Malone tossed a shutout in game one, and
Bobby Finn hit three home runs in game two, as the Bearcats swept Chatham University in a conference doubleheader.
Â
Game scores were 3-0 and 20-3.
Â
In game one, the Cougars got a one-out single, but a strike-out-throw-out double play ended things quickly. Malone struck out the batter and
Parker Janosko threw out the runner trying to steal, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
Â
In the bottom of the third, Janosko singled to lead off, but was erased when
Stone Holtzman hit into a fielder's choice.Â
Zach Barberich singled to left, then
Bobby Finn singled down the right field line, scoring Holtzman to make it 1-0.Â
Matt Morrone singled home Barberich, and Finn scored when
TJ Dailey reached on an error, making the score 3-0.
Â
It would be all that Malone would need, as he went the distance, scattering 7 hits, walking two and striking out three. Â
The Cougars (3-10) got on the board in the top of the first off SVC starter
Casey Jones, scoring on a walk, groundout, balk and wild pitch.
Â
The offense put Jones back in command of the game quickly, thanks to a four-run bottom of the first.Â
Stone Holtzman led off with a single, then moved to second on a wild pitch. Both
Hunter Mills and
Zach Barberich walked to load the bases, and Finn followed with a single to right that drove home a run and kept the bases loaded.  A wild pitch brought home the go-ahead run, and Morrone then hit a sacrifice fly that made it 3-1.
Nick LaCava then hit a deep triple to the left field corner that scored Finn, making the score 4-1.
Â
Chatham added an unearned run in the second to make it a 2-run game, but Finn increased the lead with one swing to lead off the third. His home run landed just in front of the Student Activities Center, well beyond the left center field fence.
Â
Later in the inning, Holtzman hit a two-run single that brought home
Tom Bash and LaCava, after the Bearcats had loaded the bases on three walks.
Â
A leadoff home run by the Cougars cut the gap to four runs, 7-3, in the top of the fourth, but SVC broke the game open in the bottom of the inning, scoring 11 runs on 6 hits, sending 16 batters to the plate. The inning included a two-run shot by Finn that landed just shy of his first home run.
Â
In the fifth inning, after Holtzman singled, Finn hit another two-run home run to left center, just clearing the fence for his third blast of the day in three consecutive innings. The milestone equaled the school record, originally set by Mike Anthony in 1991, and equaled by Finn last season against Waynesburg.
Â
Jones worked the first six innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs, walking two and striking out 7. The win increased the freshman's record to 4-0 on the season.Â
Mark Locke and
Ben Davis each worked a scoreless inning in relief, while
Ryan Rojtas (2/3) and
Jarrett Noel (1/3) shut down the Cougars in the 9th inning.
Â
Offensively, SVC pounded out 19 hits, led by Finn's 4-for-5, 6 RBI performance. Holtzman was 3-5, scored three runs and drove home three. Dailey and LaCava each had two hits and two runs scored. Dailey drove in two runs and LaCava had three RBI.
Â
Saint Vincent is now 10-3 overall on the season, 3-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The team returns to action on Tuesday (March 26), hosting Bethany College in a conference twinbill at 1PM at Bearcat Ballfield.Â
