Thanks to solid all-around play, the Bearcats earned two wins over Thiel College by scores of 6-5 and 12-5 at Bearcat Ballfield.
Saint Vincent's two starting pitchers both picked up the wins and stayed undefeated on the year, while
Bobby Finn equaled the all-time school record for career home runs.
In game one, the Tomcats got on the board in the top of the first, when Jamin Wentling hit a solo home run off Malone. Â
Â
In the bottom of the first,
Tanner Yard and
Stone Holtzman singled to start the inning, then
Matt Morrone bunted them ahead one base. Â
Bobby Finn hit a long fly ball to center and Thiel's Nick Fowkes made a diving catch for the out, but Yard tagged and scored on the play, tying the game at 1-1.
Â
In the third, Yard reached on an error with one out, then moved to third on a hit-and-run single by
Stone Holtzman.  Holtzman stole second, then
Matt Morrone singled home the Bearcats' second run. Holtzman later scored on a Finn double that put SVC up by a 3-1 margin.
Â
Two innings later, the top of the order once again got things rolling for the Bearcats, as Yard singled to lead off the inning, and Holtzman followed with a single.  Morrone once again laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners.  With one out,
Zach Barberich singled to right, scoring both runners and giving the Bearcats a 5-1 lead.
Â
The Tomcats got a pair of runs back in the top of the 7th, thanks in part to a couple of singles that never made it out of the infield.  With two runners on, Malone was able to induce a pop out to end the threat.
Â
Finn answered in the bottom of the 7th with his seventh home run of the season, a fastball that he deposited on the road in front of the Student Activities Center, to make the score 6-3.
Â
The insurance run would be needed, as Thiel scored twice in the top of the 8th to cut the margin to just one run. Â
Â
Reliever
Matt Evans retired the side in order in the ninth to seal the win, earning his fourth save in relief of Malone, who worked 7+ innings and improved his record to 4-0.
Offensively, Holtzman went 4-for-4 with four singles and two runs scored.  Yard had 2 hits and scored three times, while Finn was 2-3 with 3 RBI and
Nick LaCava was 2-4.
Â
Game two was set up as the first game of the previously scheduled doubleheader that was to be played at Thiel College, so the Bearcats played the game as the visitors.  In the bottom of the first, the Tomcats got on the board with one run on three hits to take the early lead off SVC's
Casey Jones.
Â
In the second inning, Wentling hit his second home run of the day, a three-run shot to center field that gave Thiel a 4-0 lead.
Â
In the top of the third, Yard singled with one out, and Holtzman followed with this fifth single of the day.  Morrone walked to load the bases, and Finn drew a walk to score Yard.  Barberich then singled home another run to make it 3-2. LaCava stepped to the plate and sent a drive to left center that hit the base of the fence, good enough for a bases-clearing double, giving SVC a 5-4 lead.
Â
An inning later, Morrone reached on an error, and Finn followed with his second round tripper of the day, once again nearly hitting the Student Activities Center on a deep drive to left field.  Finn's 8th blast of the year made the score 7-4, and gave him 18 in his career, tying him with TJ Conroy.
Â
The Bearcats added three runs in the fifth, with Morrone supplying the big hit, a two-run double to left.
Â
In the sixth, Thiel scored a run off Jones, but Evans came out of the bullpen with two runners on, and shut the Tomcats down, keeping the score at 10-5.
Â
The Bearcats added two late runs on an error and an RBI single by Morrone.
With the win, Jones improved his record to 5-0 on the season.
Â
Saint Vincent is now 12-7 overall, 5-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.  The team returns to action on Wednesday (April 3) traveling to West Virginia to face Bethany College in a single, 9-inning game.
