The Saint Vincent softball team ended its 2019 regular season as it traveled to Bethany College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Bearcats swept the Bison 16-2 and 21-1.

Game 1 Recap – Saint Vincent 16, Bethany 2 (5 Inn.)

Bethany opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run by Jennifer Oberthur. In the top of the second, Saint Vincent answered as
Sydney Gurneal singled up the middle to score
Kaylee Ludwick.

Trailing 2-1, the Bearcats captured the lead in the third as
Riley Assalone hit her first collegiate-career home run that also scored
Kelly Flaherty. Still in the third,
Kelsey Tobin singled through the middle that plated
Alona Sleith.

Ludwick hit a single to left center that scored Tobin. Gurneal then reached on an error by the third baseman that allowed Ludwick and Robson to score.
Johnna Karas added to the hit parade with a triple that scored Gurneal. Karas later scored on another error by the first baseman. Sleith concluded the scoring in the third with a single to left that plated Flaherty.

After scoring nine in the third with a 10-2 lead, Saint Vincent added six more runs in the fourth including a two-run homer by Sleith. The Bearcats won by the 14-run margin.

Assalone paced the offense for Saint Vincent as collected three hits in four at-bats with five runs driven in and scoring twice. Sleith added three more hits with three runs batted in and scoring twice.

Celia Knappenberger started in the circle and pitched all five innings, giving up two runs on two hits and allowing a walk. With the win, Knappenberger is now 13-6 on the season.

Game 2 Recap – Saint Vincent 21, Bethany 1 (5 Inn.)

In the second game, the Bearcats scored early and often. In the opening frame,
Lauren Miller hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Karas.

In the second inning, Karas hit a single through the left side that scored
Abbey Ginter. Tobin then reached on a fielder's choice that scored both
Megan Christner and
Mary Maceda.

Up 4-0, Sleith singled to left center that scored Tobin. Ludwick then reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Miller to score. Sleith scored the final run of the inning on a pass ball.

With Saint Vincent leading 7-0, the team added seven runs in the third, two in the fourth and five in the fifth. Bethany scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth as the Bearcats won 21-1.

Tobin led the team as she went two-for-four with three RBI and three runs. Assalone got the start and pitched all five innings giving up the unearned run on three hits.

Saint Vincent finishes the regular season 25-13, 13-3 in the PAC and will host the PAC Softball Championships this week as the number one-seed. The Bearcats will face Geneva College on Thursday, May 2 at 12:00 p.m.
