Bearcats sweep PAC opener


The Saint Vincent softball team opened the Presidents' Athletic Conference season as it hosted Chatham University. The Bearcats swept the series winning 9-1 and 4-3.

The Cougars got on the board first in the top of the second as a run scored on an error.
 
After trailing 1-0 going to the bottom of the third, Saint Vincent got on the board. With the bases loaded, Kelsey Tobin hit a double down the left line that cleared the bags and gained a 3-1 lead.
 
Alona Sleith followed it up with a single to right that scored Tobin to extend the lead to three, 4-1.
 
In the fourth inning, the Bearcats added more runs as Johnna Karas started the scoring with a double to left center that plated Kaylee Ludwick. Tobin continued the scoring as her single drove in Karas. Lauren Miller capped the fourth off with a double to right center. SVC led 7-1 going to the fifth.
 
After holding Chatham scoreless in the fifth, the Bearcats added more runs as Kelly Flaherty singled to center that brought home Sydney Gurneal. Ludwick ended the game as she reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Shae Robson to score.
 
Saint Vincent won by the eight-run margin, 9-1.
 
Tobin led the way as she collected two hits while scoring twice and plating four runs. Ludwick added three runs total as she drove in one and scored two times.
 
Celia Knappenberger got the start in the circle and pitched five innings, allowing an unearned run and striking out five. Knappenberger picked up her seventh win of the season.
 
Game 2 Recap – Saint Vincent 4, Chatham 3
 
In game two, Chatham started the scoring again as the Cougars plated two runs in the top of the first.
 
The Bearcats got on the board in the third as Riley Assalone helped her own cause with a single up the middle that scored Flaherty. After advancing to second, Assalone tied the game as she scored off Tobin's single to left field.
 
Miller then doubled to center field that plated Karas to give Saint Vincent the 3-2 lead. Gurneal capped off the scoring as her single to left allowed Tobin to score and gave the Bearcats the 4-2 lead.
 
After already scoring a run, the Cougars were threatening with runners on second and third with two outs. Saint Vincent made a pitching change that brought in Knappenberger. Knappenberger closed out the inning and maintained the 4-3 lead.
 
Saint Vincent closed out the game by only allowing two hits in the last two innings and held on 4-3.
 
Assalone not only led the team with her pitching but also at the plate. She went a perfect two-for-two while driving in a run and scoring once.
 
Assalone also picked up the win going four and two-thirds, giving up three runs on 10 hits and sitting down three on strikes. Knappenberger collected her second save as she threw two and one-third innings allowing only two hits.
 
Saint Vincent is now 14-6 while 2-0 in conference play and will travel to Geneva College on Thursday, April 4. First game is at 3:30 p.m.
