Finn, Jones enter record book in Bearcat DH sweep

It was a record setting day for both Bobby Finn and Casey Jones as the Bearcats swept a road doubleheader over Geneva College in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

Saint Vincent won the games by scores of 8-4, in extra innings, and 9-0.

In game one, Finn, a senior first baseman, hit the 19th home run of his career, becoming the school's all-time leader.  In game two, he hit another home run, giving him 10 on the season, moving him into a tie for the single-season record.  Also in game two, Jones, a freshman, struck out 13 batters, tying the record for most strikeouts in a 7-inning game.  Jones worked six innings and improved his record to 6-0.

In game one, the Golden Tornadoes took an early 3-0 lead by the end of the second inning.  Saint Vincent got on the board in the top of the fourth, when Zach Barberich walked to lead off.  He moved to second on a Nick LaCava single, then scored on a single by TJ Dailey.

An inning later, the Bearcats took the lead on one swing by Finn.  After Tanner Yard singled, Matt Morrone reached on a bunt single, and Finn cleared the bases with his record-setting 19th career home run, breaking the tie with former Bearcat TJ Conroy.

In the bottom of the sixth, Geneva fought back and tied the game against SVC's Jimmy Malone.

The Bearcats threatened to take the lead in the top of the 7thwith runners at second and third with one out, but the team was unable to bring home a run.  Malone worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 7th, sending the game to extra innings.

In the top of the 8th, LaCava singled to lead off, and was replaced by pinch runner Christopher Miller.  Dailey attempted to bunt the runner ahead, but an error put two runners on base.  A wild pitch moved Miller to third, and Dailey then advanced on a fielder's choice that also put Parker Janosko on base. Yard grounded out, but the go-ahead run scored.  Another run scored on an error, then Morrone drove home two more insurance runs with a double, giving SVC an 8-4 lead.

Matt Evans then came out of the bullpen to pitch the final inning, striking out two, as SVC won game one.

Malone earned the win and remained undefeated on the year (5-0), working 7 innings, giving up four runs and striking out eight.

In game two, the Bearcats scored in five straight innings, starting in the second when Finn hit his 10th home run of the season, placing him in a tie with Conroy for the most in a single season in team history.

Up 1-0 in the third, Shane Fajt drew a leadoff walk, and three straight singles by Joe Rudzinski, Yard, and Stone Holtzman led to a run. Morrone added another single, making the score 3-0, and Finn followed with a sacrifice fly.  LaCava doubled home two more runs, putting SVC in front 6-0.

An inning later, Dailey hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot that made the score 7-0.

In the fifth, Morrone led off with a single, and the Golden Tornadoes shifted their center fielder to the left with the power-hitting Finn at the plate.  Morrone stole second, and the throw sailed into center field, but with the outfield shifted, the ball rolled free long enough for Morrone to score on the play, giving SVC an 8-0 lead.

Morrone drove home the final run of the game on a fielder's choice in the sixth.

Meanwhile, Jones was cruising on the mound, striking out two batters in each of the first three innings before striking out the side in the fourth.  He struck out two more batters in the fifth, giving him 11 in the game. With two runners on and just one out in the bottom of the sixth, Jones struck out the final two batters of the inning to equal the record set by Max Henry in 2011.

Fred Gillespie retired the side in order in the 7th to end the game.

Jones (6-0) gave up just four hits and walked one while staying undefeated in his career.

Saint Vincent is now 14-9 on the season, 7-4 in the conference.  Geneva is 5-13, 0-8 in the PAC.  The Bearcats return to action on Monday (April 8) hosting Geneva at 4PM at Bearcat Ballfield.
