Saint Vincent hit the road north for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against Westminster College. The Bearcats split the twinbill by winning game one, 12-10, but falling in game two, 17-5.
Â
In game one, the Bearcats scored twice in the top of the first, with
Stone Holtzman and
Matt Morrone each reaching on singles with one out. Later in the inning, both runners scored on an error, putting SVC in front 2-0.
Â
The lead didn't last long, however, as the Bearcats committed three errors in the bottom of the first, leading to three runs off SVC starter
Ben Davis.
Â
The hosts broke the game open in the third, tallying five runs and chasing Davis, with the big hit coming off the bat of James Diamond, who hit a 2-run home run.
Â
The Bearcats started to chip away at the deficit in the fourth, as
Ramon Milke led off with a double, then scored when
Parker Janosko reached on an error.Â
Tanner Yard also reached on an error, and Holtzman followed with a 2-run single that made the score 8-5. After Morrone was hit by a pitch,
Bobby Finn singled home Holtzman, making it a two-run game.
Â
The gap was reduced to just one in the top of the fifth, as pinch hitter
Tom Bash drew a walk with two outs. He moved up on a single by Yard, then scored when Holtzman reached on an error.
Â
The Titans added a run in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 9-7, but the Bearcats took the lead back on one swing in the top of the sixth. After Finn drew a leadoff walk, Barberich hit a double that moved Finn to third. Milke walked to load the bases, and the Bearcats called on
Hunter Mills to pinch hit. Mills promptly sent a ball over the fence in left-center field for a grand slam, giving the Bearcats an 11-9 lead.
Â
The Titans threatened with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but
Casey Jones came on in relief of
Matt Evans and got the final out of the inning, preserving the Bearcat lead.
Â
Mills once again stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the 7th, this time drawing a walk that made the score 12-9.
Â
Diamond led off the bottom of the 7th with his second home run of the day, making the score 12-10, and the next two runners reached base. Barberich then headed to the mound to try to earn the save, but yielded a walk to load the bases with no outs. A shallow fly out resulted in the first out of the inning, and then a controversial play followed. A ground ball was hit back to Barberich, who threw home for the apparent second out.Â
Â
The umpire originally called the runner safe at home, but after a conference between umpires, the call was overturned and became the second out of the inning. The next batter hit a grounder into the gap between first and second, and Holtzman was able to field it and hit Barberich, who was covering the bag at first, with the throw to end the game.
Â
Holtzman led the offense by going 3-for-5, while Mills was 1-1 with 5 RBI. Evans (2-1) picked up the win in relief, working 3 1/3 innings and giving up just one run. Barberich earned his first collegiate save.
Â
In game two, it was Westminster that scored first with a solo home run in the second. The Titans scored a run in the third and two more in the fourth that chased starting pitcher Bash from the game.
Â
In the fifth, Yard hit a ground ball with the bases loaded to get Saint Vincent on the board but still trailed 4-1.
Â
In the bottom half of the inning, the hosts collected three more runs. Two innings later, Westminster nearly doubled its run total and led 13-1.
Â
In the eighth, the Bearcats got the bats going when
Mike Hildebrand hit a double to left field that scored Yard and advanced
Matt Evans to third. Evans scored on the next at-bat as
Nate Roebuck grounded out.
Â
Shane Fajt ended the scoring of the inning with a sacrifice fly that platted Hildebrand. Westminster still held on to the lead, 13-4.
Â
In the latter half the eighth, the Titans added four more runs and extended their lead to 13 runs. SVC closed the scoring when Hildebrand once again brought in Yard to bring the score to 17-5, as was the final.
Â
Yard and Hildebrand led the Bearcats from the plate. Yard went 2-4 with a run batted in and two runs. Hildebrand went a perfect 2-2 with two RBI and a run. Bash picked up the loss as he went three and two-thirds giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk.
Â
Saint Vincent is now 15-10, 8-5 in the PAC. Westminster moves to 10-12, 5-6 in the conference. The Bearcats will host Geneva Wednesday, April 10 for a single, nine-inning game with first pitch is at 4 p.m.
