Saint Vincent falls in home opener

The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team welcomed Penn State-Behrend for its first home match in SVC history. The Bearcats fell in straight sets to the Lions. 

In the opening set, Behrend won the first point but Saint Vincent won the next three including two kills from Collin Neville. The Lions answered by winning the next three points to take a 4-3 lead. Both teams exchanged points with SVC regaining the advantage, 6-5. Behrend went on a 5-0 run to take a four-point edge (10-6). 

The Bearcats traded points with the Lions and eventually cut the difference to three. Unfortunately, Behrend went on a long run by winning 11 of the next 12 possible points to go up 23-10. The Lions held on to win the first set, 25-12.

Behrend took an early 4-1 lead in the middle set but SVC battled back and tied the set at five after an ace from Neville. The Lions then won eight of the next nine points to take a 13-6 edge. Saint Vincent kept the deficit to single digits and cut it to five before Behrend closed out the set, 25-19. 

In the final set, the visitors to an early 5-1 lead but the Bearcats slowly chipped away at the lead and trailed only by one (10-9) thanks to a kill from Mitchell Niderstros. Behrend held the lead and eventually pulled away with another run to take a 19-11 advantage. Saint Vincent did not get any closer than seven as the Lions held on to win the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-0.

Neville led the Bearcats with eights and nine digs. Niderstros added seven kills while Gage McCracken totaled six. Joshua Canty tallied 10 assists with Matthew Furrer contributing nine more.

Saint Vincent falls to 0-3 on the year and will host Geneva College on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Start time is 7 p.m.
