The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse opened the 2020 home season against the University of Mount Union. The Bearcats picked their first victory of the season by defeating the Raiders, 10-7.
SVC opened the scoring at the 13:09 mark as
Matthew Cassidy scored his first colligate goal. Saint Vincent held that lead until 3:43 left in the first when Mount Union tied the game at one. SVC responded 22 seconds later as
Max Schuler scored off a pass from
Caleb Hawkins. The Raiders tied the score at two just before the break from the first to the second period.
In the second period, the Bearcats regained the lead as
Alec Richard netted a pass from
Zach Novelli. Mount Union quickly answered to even the game at three. With 9:26 left in the half,
Jacob Visalli scored a man-up goal to give Saint Vincent a 4-3 lead. The score remained this way to halftime.
The Raiders opened the second half with two goals separated by 40 seconds to gain their first lead of the game, 5-4. Novelli scored his first of the game to tie the game at five with a helper from
Caleb Hawkins. The Bearcats captured the lead with a goal from
Andrew Coholich as
Jordan Billet assisted on the play. The lead was short lived as the Raiders tied the score once again just over a minute later, this time at six. With 1:34 on the clock,
Jakob Lefchik gave SVC a 7-6 edge with another assist from
Nate Salera.Â
In the final period of regulation, Mount Union scored 45 seconds into the fourth to square the game up at seven. Coholich and Saint Vincent regained the lead at the 10:31 mark as Cassidy picked up an assist. Billet then scored scored his first collegiate goal to expand the lead to two (9-7).
James Carden sealed the game with his first Saint Vincent goal with 3:57 to go in regulation off a pass from Visalli. SVC held on for the three-goal victory.
Hawkins finished the day with three assists while Coholich was the only Bearcat with multiple goals.SVC out shot Mount Union 23-14 on goal as the Bearcats were 22-24 on clears for the day.
Kevin Tregoning notched the win in goal as he made seven saves while Brook McClay was credited with the loss while making 13 saves.
Saint Vincent improves to 1-1 on the year and will travel to Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Start time is 4 p.m.
