The Saint Vincent College men's volleyball team opened its 2021 season on the road at Geneva College in a non-conference matchup. The Bearcats fell to the Golden Tornadoes fell in straight sets, 3-0.
In the opening set, Geneva (4-5) won the first three points. Saint Vincent (0-1) won five of the next eight points to pull within one (6-5). Both teams exchanged the next six points until the Golden Tornadoes rattled off nine-straight points to take a 18-8 lead. Geneva went on to win the set 25-14.Â
The second set was similar to the first with Geneva taking an early lead. The Bearcats tried to cut the deficit pulling within four (9-5) but the Golden Tornadoes won seven of the next eight points to increase their lead to 10 (16-6). Geneva eventually took the second set, 25-10.
In the third, the battle was even between both sides as they traded small runs throughout the set. SVC tied the set at 12, unfortunately Geneva claimed nine of the next 12 points to grasp a 21-15 advantage. The Bearcats were able to pull within three but dropped the final set (25-21) and the match (3-0).
Joshua Welteroth led SVC with seven kills.
Matthew Minkin paced the defense with seven digs while
Matthew Furrer tallied 19 assists.
Saint Vincent continues its season on Saturday, March 13 at Penn State-Behrend in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup. Start time is 7 p.m.
