The Saint Vincent College men's volleyball team welcomed Medaille College for its home opener. The Bearcats fell to the Mavericks, 3-0.
Medaille (2-3, 1-1) opened the match by winning the first nine points. Saint Vincent (0-4, 0-3) tried to battle back but struggled to overcome the large deficit. The Mavericks took the set 25-13.
In the second set, the Bearcats took the first sizeable lead, 8-4. Medaille tied the set at eight and the pattern continued from there. SVC took a lead but the Mavericks battled back to tie the set.Â
Both squads threatened to take the set but neither side was able to capitalize until Medaille claimed the final two points to win the set, 35-33.
The third set bagan with the Mavericks taking a 10-6 advantage but Saint Vincent tied the score at 12. After Medaille won three of the next four points, the Bearcats rattled off five-straight to lead by three (18-15), capped off by a kill from
Joshua Welteroth.
The Mavericks won nine of the next 12 points to to regain the lead, this time 24-21. SVC won the next two points but fell just short and dropped the set, 25-23 and the match, 3-0.
Matthew Minkin led the Bearcats with 15 kills while Welteroth finished with seven.
Matthew Furrer completed the contest with 25 assists as Minkin also led the team in digs with nine.Â
Saint Vincent welcomes the Thiel College Tomcats on Sunday, March 21 for an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference showdown. Start time is 3 p.m.
