Men's Volleyball notches first program victory


The Saint Vincent College men's volleyball team st history by winning its first match since the program was announced in 2019. The Bearcats defeated the Thiel Tomcats, 3-1.

In the opening set, Saint Vincent (1-4, 1-3) won seven of the first nine points. Thiel (0-5, 0-3) slowly chipped away at the Bearcats lead then used a 6-0 run to pull within one (17-16). SVC claimed four of the next five to open the advantage to 21-17. The Tomcats got within three but the Bearcats closed the set on a kill by Matthew Minkin to win 25-20.

In the second, Thiel was the team to jump out to an early lead, 8-4. After trading points, Saint Vincent won nine of the next 12 points, capped off by a Minkin ace, to lead 18-16. The Tomcats used a run of its own to win the set, 25-20.

Thiel repeated its efforts in the third by taking the first sizable advantage. Just like in the second, the Bearcats used another run to gain the lead, 11-10. The game went back and forth until SVC edged out a three-point lead (19-16). The Tomcats tied the game and eventually looked to close out the set but a kill from Ethan Kammerer evened the score at 24.

Saint Vincent won the next point on a block by Joshua Welteroth before Welteroth won the set with a kill on the following point. The Bearcats took the set 26-24 and led 2-1 in the match.

The fourth set began with SVC gaining a 8-5 advantage. Thiel won four of the next five to even the game at nine but the Bearcats responded by taking the six-straight points to lead 15-9. The Tomcats pulled within three (16-13) and eventually one (19-18). Saint Vincent answered, winning six of the final eight points as Welteroth ended the match with a kill. SVC won the set 25-20 and the match, 3-1.

Minkin paced the attack with 14 kills while Anthony Ditonto and Kammerer added 12 and 10, respectively. Welteroth and Matthew Klasnic led the defense with 16 digs while Minkin finished with 13. Matthew Furrer ended with a game-high 39 assists.

Saint Vincent concludes the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday, March 24 against Geneva College. Start time is 7 p.m.
