LATROBE, Pa. (Jan. 20)- Visiting Geneva College used a blistering long-range shooting attack to defeat Saint Vincent 85-69 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup in the Robert S. Carey Student Center.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Bearcats (2-10), but the balanced scoring effort wasn't enough to overcome a blistering offensive performance by the Golden Tornadoes (6-6), who shot 54 percent from the field and connected on 17 three-pointers.
Jayven Millien battled through foul trouble to score 15 points in just 16 minutes of play to lead the Bearcats offensively, while
Nelson Etuk and
Osyon Jones each added 11 points, and
Arguel Drotleff 10, by way of a 3-for-5 performance from behind the arc.
The Golden Tornadoes came out of the gates on fire, connecting on 6 three-pointers in the opening five minutes of play to open up an 18-11 lead. Their seventh three of the night, with 12:54 left in the half, opened up a 10-point lead, 23-13, but SVC would cut into the gap, with a driving layup from Etuk trimming the deficit to 28-21 at the midpoint of the half.
Geneva would regroup to own play over the closing stages of the half. In the final nine minutes, the Golden Tornadoes out-scored the Bearcats 27-8, with five more three-pointers, to take a 55-29 lead into the break.
Over the first 20 minutes of play, Geneva shot 61 percent from the field, including a staggering 14-for-20 mark from long range. Â Â
Saint Vincent chipped away at the gap to open the second half. Over the first seven minutes of the frame, the Bearcats outscored the Golden Tornadoes 18-6. Drotleff hit a pair of three-pointers during the run, with Etuk, Jones,
Diego Martinez and Caleb Field also adding baskets, as SVC pulled to within 61-47.
Fields' second trey of the half kept the deficit at 14, 64-50, with 9:54 remaining, but the visitors answered with a 18-7 run over the next four minutes to open up an 82-57 lead with just over five minutes left.
The surge put the game away for Geneva, though the Bearcats ended the game strong, outscoring their visitors 12-3 over the final five minutes of play, with seven points coming from
Youssef Yagoub.
The Bearcats shot 44 percent from the field (28-for-64) and from distance (7-for-16), while they out-rebounded the Golden Tornadoes 36-32. Etuk and Martinez shared game-high honors with eight rebounds each.
Geneva made just one more total field goal than SVC (29), but connected on 17 from long range. The visitors also put together a strong 10-for-12 mark from the foul line.
Lyle Tipton led Geneva with 26 points, going 6-for-8 from behind the arc, while Matt Veynovich added 23 points, with seven three-pointers. Rob Liggett and Amos Luptak shared their team's lead with six rebounds apiece.
Saint Vincent will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 22, facing off against PAC foe Chatham University at 7 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
