The Saint Vincent women's bowling team won the championship of the Unicorn Invitational, hosted by Penn State-Altoona, sweeping all five matches on the afternoon.
It was the team's second straight tournament win this season, and it marked the second year in a row that SVC took home the Unicorn trophy.
The wins didn't come easily for the Bearcats, as they struggled throughout the day on tough conditions, and were forced to come from behind in the championship match against Penn State-Behrend.
SVC opened the day with an 833-724 win over host Penn State-Altoona, then defeated Penn State-Behrend by a score of 846-810. In the third match, the Bearcats fell behind Pitt-Bradford by 51 pins after the first game of the five-game set (207-156). SVC cut into the margin over the next three games, but trailed by 10 going into the final game. After an open frame to start the game, SVC reeled off 9 straight marks to post a 184 game, while the Panthers shot a 159 and SVC won the match 824-809.
Entering the semifinal match as the #1 seed, the Bearcats defeated #4 Altoona 819-675, setting up a championship match against PSU-Behrend, winners over Pitt-Bradford in their semifinal.
Saint Vincent won the first game by just 6 pins, then lost the next two games by 10 pins each, as Behrend opened up a 14-pin lead in the series. In game four, Saint Vincent continued to struggle, and lost by 13 pins, giving the Lions a 27-pin advantage going into the final game of the day. With their backs to the wall, Saint Vincent responded by opening an 11-pin lead early in the match, but a split in the fifth frame left the Bearcats only five remaining frames to make up the rest of the difference.Â
Cassandra Bromke and
Sabine Strickland converted spares in frames 6 and 7, then
Monique Koehler threw a strike in the 8th frame.Â
Jackie Koehler threw a pocket shot in the 9th frame, but the 10-pin stood, and she was forced to make the spare to keep the Bearcats alive. After Koehler made the spare, SVC led the game by 21, but was still down 6 pins in the match. Bella Pilyih of PSU converted a spare in the 10th, helping the Lions to finish with a 144 game.Â
Abby Justice stepped up in the 10th needing to throw two strikes to secure the win for Saint Vincent, and the freshman responded by throwing three consecutive strikes, to give SVC a 178-144 game win and a 7-pin championship match win.
For the day, Justice led the way with an average of 188.0, while Strickland finished at 170.3.Â
Olivia Emmonds finished at 168.4, while Bromke averaged 168.3 on the afternoon. Â
Saint Vincent is now 22-1 on the season and has won 21 straight games. Â
