BEREA, Ohio (Feb. 11) – Four Saint Vincent school records were broken and four Bearcat athletes earned first-place finishes at the Baldwin Wallace Mid-February Invite.
"I challenged the team to compete and put down some marks before the conference championship," said Saint Vincent head track and field coach
Kevin Wanichko. "They answered that call in a great way."
The Bearcat women were led by senior Sydney Green, who earned a pair of top-four finishes in distance events. In the 1-mile run, Green placed second in a strong field of 35 runners in a school-record time of 5:22.38. She also added a fourth-place finish among 40 runners in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:20.35.
Miranda Guthrie also set a pair of school records to lead SVC in the sprint events, recording a time of 29.51 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 1:06.33 to finish 13th in a 36-woman field in the 400.
Green was joined in the top-third of the mile field by teammate Alissa Beam, who placed 12th in 5:49.35, while SVC had a pair of runners place in the top-half of the field in the 3,000-meter run, with Lauren Brennan taking seventh in 11:44.30, and Jessica Gibson 12th in 11:54.87.
The Bearcat men were led by a banner night from
Tim Patterson, who earned a pair of distance wins competing in the grueling 3,000-meter/5,000-meter double. In the 3K, Patterson topped a 22-runner field in a time of 9:05.22 to win by more than four seconds. In the 5K, he established a new team record with a time of 15:38.57 to earn a six-second win.
Joey Bujdos continued his exceptional indoor season with a pair of strong middle-distance efforts. Bujdos earned the victory in the 1-mile run, recording a time of 4:24.76 to top the field by two seconds, before he placed fourth out of 38 runners in the 400 with a time of 52.96 seconds.
Tyler Laughery earned the Bearcat men's fourth win of the night, topping the field in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.37, less than a half-second ahead of teammate
Aiden Jackson, who took second in 2:02.85.
Jared Holmes earned the top sprint performance for the SVC men, placing 19th in a 40-man field in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.81 seconds, while the Bearcat field contingent was led by
Auggie Frohnen, who placed in the top third of the field in the shot put with a heave of 39 feet, 3 inches, and Jeffrey Downs, who finished in the top half of the long jump field with a leap of 18 feet, 9 inches.
The Bearcats will now have a 12-day respite to prep for the Presidents' Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 24, at Youngstown State University.
