COLUMBUS, Ohio (April 23) – Competing in one of the largest collegiate track and field events in the nation, Saint Vincent's
Sydney Green and
Joey Bujdos represented Saint Vincent well.
At the Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State University, both Bearcat mid-distance standouts battled through unseasonable high-80s temperatures to compete in the 800-meter run.
In the women's race, Green turned in a time of 2:19.23, the second-fastest mark of her stellar four-year career.
On the men's side, Bujdos won his heat in a time of 1:54.03, also his second-fastest career mark and less than a half second off of a new personal record.
"It was a great experience for Sydney and Joey," said Saint Vincent head coach
Kevin Wanichko. "It might not have been the day we hoped for, as it was much hotter than they had trained for all year, but they both ran the second-fastest times of their careers. We may have wanted more, but they still both have a lot to be proud of."
Student-athletes from 37 NCAA Division-I, II, III and NAIA institutions representing nine different states competed in the 23rd annual Jesse Owens Classic, named in honor of the late-Ohio State graduate who won four Olympic gold medals in 1936 and at one time held four different world records.
Green, Bujdos and the Bearcats will now shift their focus to the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held Thursday, April 28, and Friday, April 29, at West Virginia University's Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia.
